Mike and Jenny Breedlove drew a loyal following when they opened their sandwich shop at 316 Chadwick Avenue. They expanded the menu, the specials and the hours, all until they fell victim to the volatile labor market.
“The front of the house was great,” Jenny said. “It was the back of the house that just could not keep cooks. Mike was always getting stuck in the kitchen and he was getting tired of it.”
So when a great job opportunity at Performance Food Group opened up, Mike sold his donut machine and food trailer and other equipment and took the job covering Henderson, Transylvania and Buncombe counties for PFG.
In the meantime, Jenny recruited a good friend, Becky Bradley, to open The Queen B’s Marketplace.
“Instead of a restaurant with a store, we’re a store with a restaurant,” she said. They serve coffee, tea, wine, beer, sandwiches, milkshakes and other lunch items in one part of shop and have filled the rest with clothing, jewelry, art and other items displayed in 30 spaces vendors rent.
Breedlove and Bradley met when Bradley came in regular as a customer. They bonded over a shared loss. “We got to know each other and unfortunately, she had a son that passed away from the same cancer that my son passed away from,” Breedlove said. “And we got to talking and became friends and here we are.”
