Tips on cemetery maintenance and a workshop on the cleaning, leveling and repair of gravestones will be taught from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Fanning Chapel United Methodist Church, 5490 Old Haywood Road (N.C. 191), in Mills River.
Warren Scott, gravestone conservator and chair of the Henderson County Cemetery Advisory Committee, will teach the course.
This course is not only for persons who are maintaining church and family cemeteries, but is also for the public.
“People may not realize that some churches and volunteers are only maintaining the grounds of the cemeteries,” said committee member Jennie Jones Giles. “Descendants and family members are often responsible for the repair and cleaning of the gravestones.”
There are proper methods for cleaning and repair to preserve the stones, she said.
The work is wet and dirty; dress accordingly.
