State Rep. Jake Johnson, the youngest member of the N.C. General Assembly and deputy majority whip of the House, last week announced his plans to seek re-election to a fourth term representing the 113th District. The district is made up of Polk, southern Henderson, western Rutherford and southern McDowell counties. A native of Polk County, Johnson, 29, has served in the legislature since 2019.
“I could not be prouder of what we have been able to accomplish in my time representing District 113 in the House," he said. "Not only have we been able to consistently bring back record amounts of money to the district, but we have also been able to pass commonsense legislation that has improved lives right here in western North Carolina. However, the work is not done. I want to continue fighting for my constituents to make sure the next generation has what they need to succeed right here at home."
Johnson noted that since Republicans have taken a supermajority in the Legislature and been able to override vetoes made by Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper’s, they have and will continue to see what he touted as “huge legislative successes,” combatting Environment Social Governance investments, banning Critical Race Theory from the classroom, protecting the sanctity of life, defending the second amendment, protecting women’s athletics, prohibiting gender reassignment surgeries and medication from being given to minors and election law reforms.
Johnson chairs the influential House Oversight Committee and the Information Technology Appropriations Committee and is vice chair of the House Appropriations and Commerce committees.
Johnson said he is proud to go into this election with wide support of prominent state and local officials Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, the leading candidate for the Republican gubernatorial nomination next March.
“Rep. Johnson is a true champion for his constituents and someone we need in the legislature to continue to push a conservative agenda, and ensure our state is heading in the right direction," Robinson said in a statement. "He has my full and complete endorsement.”
