Henderson County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a Tennessee man Saturday night after he opened fire on them following a car chase, the sheriff's office said Monday.
The sheriff's office received a call at 6:07 p.m. that a man with a gun was threatening people at the North Mills River Campground. When officers arrived, the suspect drove off and deputies gave chase. After the driver crashed his van, he fired shots from the vehicle. leading to the exchange of gunfire, the sheriff's office said in a news release.
In a news update it issued Monday afternoon the sheriff's office identified the suspect, who died at the scene, as Hayden Elias Brook, 29, of Tennessee. Brook's next of kin has been notified.
Based on sheriff's office protocol for officer-involved shootings, the deputies involved were placed on administrative leave and the SBI was notified and is currently conducting an investigation. No further information was released, the news release said, citing the fact that the investigation is ongoing.
