Henderson County residents should be aware of scam involving people falsely representing themselves as law enforcement officers and demanding money, according to a press release from the county sheriff’s office.
The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office receives almost daily reports about residents answering calls from suspects who say they are officers with the sheriff’s office. Some callers use names of current officers and some use the names of retired officers, according to the press release.
The callers then tell their potential victims that they have missed a court date or jury duty and need to pay fines by getting green dot cards, gift cards or putting money into a bitcoin machine.
The calls are a scam. The sheriff’s office never calls people to ask for money, according to the press release.
Officials with the department suggest that people hang up immediately if they receive calls that ask them to stay on the line while a transaction is completed.
People with questions about court dates or jury duty notices should contact the Henderson County Clerk of Courts Office at 828-694-4100
