Farm City Day set for Oct. 5

Farm City Day, featuring agricultural educational displays, a farm animal petting zoo, antique and modern farm equipment and crafters from many generations, takes place 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Jackson Park.

Founded in 1955, the free event focuses on agricultural awareness.
"The goal is to teach kids where their food comes from and who produces it," Agriculture Extension agent Steve Pettis said. "It is important that people understand that the food they eat is produced by farmers who care about providing wholesome nutritious food to their community. The Farm City Day event celebrates Henderson County's rural farming traditions and introduces the urban population to some common farming activities of today and even some from the past."

Farm City Day is presented by Henderson County's N.C. State Cooperative Extension office, Hendersonville Kiwanis Club, Animals R Us Veterinary Clinic, Henderson County Parks and Recreation, FFA and the N.C. Department of Agriculture. Sponsors include Henderson County Farm Bureau, the Community Foundation, Pepsi, North River Farms, Turf Mountain Sod, Kole Kole Ice, Cason Co., Epperson Tree Service, Wild Birds Unlimited, Carolina Specialties Construction, Mills River Partnership, S&L Windows and Doors, Freeman Farm Insurance, Blue Ridge Apple Growers, Morrow Insurance and Tri-Hishtil Greenhouses.
