Health department will test well water for free

The Henderson County Department of Public Health will provide well water sampling at no charge to Henderson County residents impacted by Hurricane Helene.

Environmental health staff will provide well water testing at no charge for flooded or damaged wells. The testing is solely to determine the presence of coliform bacteria and E. coli in existing private drinking water wells following disinfection.

Testing is only needed if you believe the storm flooded or damaged your well. A flooded well is where water has risen over the top of the well at any point during the storm. Any well that sustained structural damage will also need to be disinfected and tested before use. Before requesting well water sampling, please make sure that:

  • Power has been restored
  • Well has been disinfected
  • The property and wellhead are accessible

Environmental Health staff will collect well water samples as supplies and resources allow. To request well water collection by the health department, and more guidance, visitwww.hendersoncountync.gov/health or call the environmental health office at 828-694-6060.
