NWS issues flood warning for French Broad at Blantyre

A cold front is expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall Saturday night through Sunday with the potential for accumulations of 3-5 inches and a chance of flooding along the French Broad River at Fletcher, the National Weather Service said.

High water would affect low-lying areas, including farmland, parks, greenways, boat-access areas and golf courses. The most likely period of potential flooding is Sunday morning through Sunday evening, the weather service said, adding that there's uncertainty about exact rainfall amounts. The NWS issued a flood warning for the French Broad River and low-lying areas in Penrose, Blantyre and Etowah.

The forecast calls for showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 2 p.m., then showers likely, potentially heavy at times.  Chance of precipitation is 100 percent Sunday with rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible, dropping to 40 percent Sunday night. Things improve markedly Monday, with a high of 56 under sunny skies, the NWS forecast.
