Henderson County sheriff's deputies charged a 39-year-old Asheville man with first-degree burglary and other felonies after a homeowner reported an overnight theft.
Responding to a resident's call on Dec. 19, deputies discovered that the homeowner had awoken to find several items missing from the home and a door left ajar. It was determined that an individual had entered the home during the night while the homeowner was asleep. Major crimes unit detectives were promptly notified and initiated an investigation that led them to identify Kevin Eugene Mapp Jr. as the primary suspect. An arrest warrant was subsequently issued for charges including first-degree burglary, larceny after the fact and two counts of financial card fraud.
On Dec. 31, deputies in collaboration with the U.S. Marshals Service Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Asheville Police Department and the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Mapp in Asheville without incident. Following his arrest, investigators executed a search warrant at his residence, where items stolen during the burglary were recovered.
Mapp was transported to the Henderson County jail to appear before a magistrate. Because of pending charges with secured bonds in both Buncombe County and Tennessee, he was initially held without bond. His bond was later set at $150,000, according to jail records.
