Asheville man sentenced to prison for home burglary

A 40-year-old Asheville man was sentenced to nine years in prison on Friday after pleading guilty to charges of first-degree burglary, larceny after breaking and entering, and to two counts of financial card theft, District Attorney R. Andrew Murray announced.

According to the investigation and evidence presented at trial, Kevin Engene Mapp Jr. was involved in a traffic accident in Buncombe County last Nov. 24 where he exchanged personal information with the victim. Having this personal information, Mapp on Dec. 14 broke into the victim’s home in Henderson County while the home was occupied and during nighttime hours. Physical evidence such as cell phone data, a video recording and a pawn ticket led law enforcement to Mapp. Superior Court Judge Peter Knight sentenced Mapp, who is also a registered sex offender, to a maximum term of up to nine years, three months in the state prison.

Assistant District Attorney Michael Van Buren handled the prosecution and sentencing of. Murray thanked the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office and lead Detective Scott Aly for the professional and thorough investigation of this case.

“When someone violates trust and the sanctity of a person’s home, they will be prosecuted accordingly,” Murray said.
