Indian tractor maker moving U.S. headquarters here

Indian auto company Mahindra Vehicle Sales and Service Inc. announced Thursday that it would locate its North American  corporate headquarters in Fletcher.

Mahindra has an established reputation for their farm equipment brand in the US, and is gaining attention for their internationally-recognized presence in the automotive sector. The MVSS location will support planned growth as the company integrates new product into the US market. The company will employ 22 people at the headquarters, primarily salespersons and office support functions, with average wages exceeding $100,000 a year, for a total annual payroll of $2.2 million. It is leasing an existing building at 37 Brickyard Road.

Mahindra was established in India in 1945 during World War II when they began production of the Willys Jeep. Mahindra made their US entry in 1994, locating a tractor manufacturing operation in Texas. The Mahindra North American Technical Center was established in Troy, MI in 2013, as the company announced their intent to expand their global vehicle development in the US.

The MVSS location in Henderson County is in response to this growth trend and desire to sell on and off-road vehicles in the US.

“A location in the southeastern automotive market, and the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains, is ideal for our company to accelerate our growth in the automotive sector. With great transportation assets like I-26 and the Asheville Regional Airport, we plan to cover a lot of ground from Henderson County,” said Luc de Gaspe Beaubien, MVSS Vice President of Sales.

“Henderson County has a track record of success in supporting businesses in the automotive sector. We are excited to see growth in the professional business services sector, and we are happy to welcome Mahindra to North Carolina,” said Michael Edney, chairman of the Henderson County Board of Commissioners.
