County's chapter honored as Outstanding Local League

The Henderson County chapter of the League of Women Voters was recognized as an Outstanding Local League Saturday at the biennial League of Women Voters North Carolina Convention in Chapel Hill.

Among the 18 local leagues, 10 with more than 50 members, Henderson County was chosen for its many accomplishments including community education and advocacy programming, voter registration events, candidate forums, increase in membership (currently 117) and Open World Program. Nan Jennings and Rachel Poller, co-presidents of the Henderson County league, accepted the award. 

More than 100 of the state’s 1,952 members including 12 from Henderson County attended the 37th biennial convention. Hendersonville Mayor Barbara Volk, a member of the League, served as the convention’s parliamentarian.

Guest speakers included Virginia Kase, CEO of LWV United States, and lawyer Allison Riggs, of the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, who represented the League in the U.S. Supreme Court arguments in March challenging North Carolina redistricting. Poller and Jennings attributed the LWV Henderson County’s achievements and success to the focused team approach of the many local volunteer members who work to “Empower Voters. Defend Democracy.”
