Reopening of Greenville Highway is delayed

Work on a roundabout at Shepherd Street and Erkwood Drive has closed Greenville Highway since July 17.

The detour that has closed Greenville Highway at Erkwood Drive and Shepherd Street will go on a little longer than its original Oct. 17 end date, the NCDOT said last week.

The new projected opening date is Oct. 22.
“The work by the Graham County Land Co. appears to be behind schedule for that location,” NCDOT spokesman David Uchiyama. The NCDOT can grant the contractor a four- or five-day extension, “after which liquidated damages of $1,000 a day may be assessed.”
Flat Rock Village Council member Ginger Brown said it's possible the delay could be longer.
“Do I think the road is going to be done? I don’t think so,” she said. “These things always take longer than we expect."

She said the roundabout work, like the Highland Lake Road improvement, is worth a short-term detour.

"People will say that we’re going to be inconvenienced and that’s a reason not to do anything," she said. "We’re going to be inconvenienced but afterwards it’s going to be so much better. I remember the same thing about Upward Road and now it’s so much better.”
