Heavy rain caused sewage spills off White Street, at Berkeley Mills Park and on Balfour Road on Friday afternoon, the city of Hendersonville said in a news release.
The first three overflows of untreated wastewater occurred at manholes on Jonesborough Street, which connects White Street and Kanuga Road, between 1:21 and 1:45 p.m. and released 6,390 gallons of untreated wastewater. The fourth was from a manhole across from 305 Berkeley Rd at the greenway parking lot at 2:57 p.m., which released approximately 10,260 gallons of untreated wastewater. The fifth discharge was from a manhole at 99 Balfour Road at 3:30 p.m., releasing approximately 4,800 gallons of untreated wastewater. The overflows, caused by the excessive rainfall, entered Mud Creek in the French Broad River basin.
Under state law, the city is required to notify the public via a news release when a spill of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.
