Cooper appoints Moffitt to replace McGrady

Gov. Roy Cooper has appointed Tim Moffitt to the seat made vacant by the resignation of state Rep. Chuck McGrady, sending the appointment documents to the House clerk on Monday, the governor's press office said.

Moffitt, 56, served in the House from 2011 to 2015, losing his re-election bid in 2014 to Democrat Brian Turner. Moffitt lived in Buncombe County at the time; since then, he has moved to Henderson County, where he was born and raised.

“As the speaker has told me they will recognize my frequent flyer miles so I’ll have seniority,” he said.

A lead writer of tax reform the Legislature adopted during his two terms in the House, Moffitt said he is interested in re-engaging in that area, getting a seat on the Appropriations Committee and returning to the redistricting committee.

The House District 117 Republican executive committee on Thursday nominated Moffitt, the Republican nominee for the seat, to serve the remaining three months of McGrady's unexpired term.
