Mark A. Lively, Sr., 51

Mark A. Lively, Sr., 51, of East Flat Rock passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock.
Born in Fayetteville, NC, he was the son of Mildred A. Lively and the late Cecil O. Lively, Sr. He was also preceded in death by his son, Mark A. Lively, Jr., who died in 1995.
In addition to his mother, Mark is survived by his wife, Teresa “Terri” Lively of East Flat Rock; daughter, Cody Goforth; stepson, Jon Porter; two grandchildren, Mia and Zayden; brothers, David Lively and wife, Cindy, Cecil Lively, Jr. and Paul Lively; maternal grandmother, Margie Hoxit; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and very special friends, Gerald and Barbara Wright.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM Friday, June 5, 2015 at Upward Christian Fellowship with the Reverend Anthony Craver officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Jack David Hodges, 83 of Hendersonville passed away Friday May 22, 2015 at Sunny Brook Assisted Living with his loving wife by his side.
Jack lived his life to the fullest and he did it his way.
Survivors include his wife Judith S. Hodges of Hendersonville, one daughter Jane Misser of CA, two sons, Peter Hodges and Fredrick Hodges both of CA , two brothers, Bill Hodges and Bob Hodges and one grandson, Graham Misser.

Joseph M. Shackett, 75

Joseph M. Shackett, 75, of Hendersonville passed away Friday, May 22, 2015 at Duke University Hospital, Durham, NC.
Joe was the son of Joseph and Reedith Shackett and was raised in the Detroit, Michigan area. He was a graduate of Wayne State University and received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1962 and a Master’s Degree in Teaching in 1971.
He moved to California in the early 60’s. In Downey, California, he worked at North American Rockwell Corporation as a Test Engineer for the Apollo Project and the Saturn S-II Systems. From 1969-1974, he worked as a Mathematics Teacher for the Detroit School system. The remainder of his working life (1975-1999) was spent as an Aerospace Engineer with the Department of Defense in California; Naples, Italy; and Florida. During his career, he traveled throughout Europe and spent 3 years in Italy, where he met his wife, Tammy. He retired from the Jacksonville Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida, in June 1999.
Joe moved to Henderson County as a full-time resident in 2011. Ever young at heart, he loved riding his motorcycle on the mountain roads. Joe was fond of the saying “Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul.” Besides motorcycle riding, he also enjoyed remote control airplanes, nature hikes and skiing. Joe played golf for many years and was an avid reader.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Tammy Shackett; brothers-in-law, Dave Stener, Bruce Stener and his wife Kim, and Dale Radke; and several nieces and nephews.
The family is planning a celebration of Joe’s life to be held in June.

Robert “Bob” James Gasperson, Sr., 80

Robert “Bob” James Gasperson, Sr., 80, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2015. He was born and was a resident of Buncombe County until 1971 when he moved to Henderson County. He lived and worked in Henderson County until recently moving back to Buncombe County. He was a graduate of Valley Springs High School and was a lifelong entrepreneur, having owned and operated several businesses, including the Huddle House Restaurant in Naples and Gasperson Trucking Company. He loved fishing and NASCAR, having qualified for the Daytona 500 as a car owner in the early 1960s.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Evelyn Gasperson, and a sister, Judy. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Inez Mills Gasperson; three children, Kim Gasperson-Justice and her husband, Ron, of Hendersonville, Robert James Gasperson, Jr.” Jimmy” Gasperson and his wife, Stacey, of Mills River and Karen Ensley and her husband, Kevin, of Candler; and seven grandchildren, Colton, Gabe, Christian, Erin, Trenton, Kaitlyn and Greyson.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 4th from 2:00 until 3:45 pm at Naples Baptist Church in Naples. A funeral service will follow at 4:00 pm. Burial will be at 10:00 am on Friday, June 5th at Avery’s Creek Christian Church in Avery’s Creek.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association or a charity of one’s choice.

Elizabeth “Betty” Burton, 93

Elizabeth “Betty” Burton, 93, of Carolina Village died Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at the Carolina Village Medical Center.
Born in Westfield, Massachusetts, a daughter of the late Carl and Margaret Schaeffer, she grew up on Long Island and graduated from Sewanhaka High School and Washington School for Secretaries. She was the secretary to the vice-president of Automatic Electric of New York City. Betty had been a resident of Henderson County since 1982 and was a member of First Baptist Church of Hendersonville.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Burton, Jr. in 2003, and a brother, Charles Schaeffer in 1978.
Surviving are her two sons, Fred Burton III of Marshville, NC and Gregory Burton of Charleston, SC; grandchildren, James Burton of Raleigh and Kristen Pittman of Lynchburg, VA; 4 great-grandchildren, Joyce Burton, Marie Burton, Kylie Pittman, Karleigh Pittman; and a sister, Marguerite Elms of N. St. Paul, Minn.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Cashew Tate, infant son of Johnny and Jennifer Tate of Horse Shoe, passed away Wednesday, May 27th at Mission Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Anthony Hunter Tate in 2007 and sister Emma Allison Tate in 2014.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Colton Dean Tate and Robert Douglas Tate; maternal grandparents, Bobby and Lynn Saltz; paternal grandparents, Doug Tate and Brenda Tate; paternal great-grandparents, Josephine Matthews; aunts, Melissa Saltz, Lori Hartle and her husband Thomas and Nicole and Kym Hazel; cousins, Amber, Tiffany and Cooper Hartle.

A funeral will be held at 2:00pm Sunday in the chapel of Forest Lawn Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Clayton Theodore Jones, 2, of East Flat Rock, fondly known by many as “Baby Clay,” was born on January 31, 2013 and healed into Heaven on May 22, 2015, surrounded by those who loved him most.
In his short life Clay touched many people all over the world, most of whom had never met him, yet he had a profound impact on their lives. We believe that Clay knew how much he was loved by everyone. The family would like to thank everyone who prayed for Clay and assisted in his care.
Clay is survived by his mommy, Delphia Jones; stepfather, Jackson Hunter; sister, Anna Grace Hunter; maternal grandmother, Darcey Jones; maternal great-grandmother, Grace Jones; aunts, Beverly Edney and Myra Bishop (Chris) and uncle, Kevin Jones (Samantha); several cousins, and many others who love and miss him dearly.

Gary Allen Corn, 68,

Gary Allen Corn, 68, of East Flat Rock, NC went to be with the
Lord, Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at the Charles George VA Medical Center.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, was
the son of the late Roy and Gertie Mae Laughter Corn and was also
preceded in death by a sister, Dera Brown.

He was a US Army Veteran and served his country proudly in the
199th Infantry “Cottonbalers” during the Vietnam War. He was also a
lifetime member of the Hedrick-Rhodes V.F.W. #5206.

He retired from the Henderson County Solid Waste Department after over 20 years of service.

Gary is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Donna Laughter
Corn; a son, Matthew Allen Corn and wife Jamie Vlahos Corn of
Hendersonville, NC; a daughter, Traci Leah Corn of Horse Shoe; a
granddaughter, Annaleigh Mae Corn; two sisters, Louise Lewis of Homer,
Illinois and Margaret Whitford of Honea Path, SC; his faithful canine
companion, Bonnie and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, May 30 at the
Chapel In The Pines of Jackson Funeral Service with Rev. Mikell Bennett
officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with
military honors conducted by the Henderson County Honor Guard. The
family will receive friends Friday night from 6:00 PM till 8:00 PM at
Jackson Funeral Service.

Charles C. Burrell, 80

Charles C. Burrell, 80

Charles C. Burrell, 80, of Hendersonville, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, was promoted to glory on May 18, 2015, from Carolina Village Medical Center after a brief illness. He was a son of the late Grover C. and Arrilee Anders Burrell. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy R. and Robert W. Burrell and two sisters, Nina B. Pace and Pauline B. McAbee.

Charles was a lifelong resident of Henderson County and was educated at Flat Rock High School. He served in the United States Army as a radio repairman in Italy. He always loved the out-of-doors and was a well-known nurseryman and landscaper in Hendersonville, and later an avid golfer. Charles was an active member of Mud Creek Baptist Church. After his retirement, he and his wife resided at Carolina Village in Hendersonville.

Charles is survived by his wife of 57 years, Yvonne King Burrell; two sons, Charles Russell Burrell and wife Elizabeth of Hendersonville, and D.L. Burrell and wife Jennifer of Tucker, Georgia; a brother, Fred D. Burrell; two sisters, Carolyn B. Stepp and June B. Pace; five grandchildren and one great-grandson.

The funeral service will be held at Mud Creek Baptist Church at 2 pm on Friday, May 22. The Reverends Greg Mathis and Christopher Roberts will officiate. Private interment will take place at Shepherd Memorial Park. A visitation will be held at Mud Creek on Thursday, May 21, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Vollie F. Corn, 89, of Hendersonville and a longtime member of Ebenezer Baptist Church passed away Monday, May 18, 2015 at the Charles George VA Medical Center.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Flossie McKinney Corn, his parents, Joel and Alma Hill Corn, a son Cecil Corn and a granddaughter, Sherri Rhodes.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County and loved the outdoors.
He served in the US Army during WW II with the 78th Lightning Division.
He is survived by a son, Chris Corn and wife KC of Hendersonville; three daughters, Dianne Case and husband Terry of Hendersonville, Linda Corn and boyfriend Scott Ledgerwood of Florida and Janice Rhodes of Hendersonville; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Corn of Bat Cave; two brothers, Jim Corn and wife Ellazene and Gordon Corn and wife Hazel all of Hendersonville; three sisters, Flora C. Cagle, Amanda C. Davis and husband Tom and Mary Lee C. Barnette and husband Louis all of Hendersonville; six grandchildren, Kenneth Case and wife Stephanie, Daniel Case and wife Jennifer, Rebecca Case, Robert Rhodes, Amy Heatherly and Kayla Cantrell and husband Brent; seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Friday, May 22, 2015 at Ebenezer Baptist Church with Pastor Steven Blanton officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Military Honors provided by the Henderson County Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Jackson Funeral Service.

Our beloved dad, Earl Amos “Papaw” Williams, traveled to Heaven to
be with our beloved mother, Christine “Nini” Williams and his daughter,
Connie Medlin and her husband Wesley Medlin and many other loved ones.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Amos and Pamie Williams, a
sister, Linda Williams and a brother Charles Williams.

He was employed by Cranston Print Works, was an apple grower and a
member of Mountain Home Baptist Church. He was a loving and caring
husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by two daughters, Janet Steinbach and Donna Owenby
and her husband Tim; grandchildren, Scott London and his wife Ardith,
Casey Owenby and his wife Krissy, Melanie McMurray and her husband John,
Christal Beaird and her husband Ray, Bob Medlin and his wife Jenni; step
granddaughter, Kimberly McMinn and her husband Allen; great
grandchildren, Evan Duckett, Dale London, Lauren and Emma McMurray,
Taylor Wiggins, Alivia Owenby, Brooklynn and Liam Beaird, Zachary
Seargant, Maci and Maddie Medlin; sisters, Elsie Wilson, Christine
Jackson, Cassie Stepp, Lula Belle Capps, Joyce Anders; a brother, Wayne
Williams and many nieces, nephews, friends.

A special thanks to Tom Ozman for caring for our dad. He will
surely be missed by many, especially his church family where he attended
for many years.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, May 16, 2015 at
Mountain Home Baptist Church with Rev. Craig Garren officiating. Burial
will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one
hour prior to the service in the church and at other times will be at
the home of Donna and Tim Owenby.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Lillian Solesbee Young, two brothers, Edward Young and Maxcy Young and a grandson, T.J. Brown.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of In Jesus Name Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Betty Jo Nix Young; three sons, David Young and his wife Edith of Hendersonville, Kevin Young and his wife Jennifer of Fayetteville, NC and Joe Young of Hendersonville; two daughters, Tammy Young of Hendersonville and Rita Gilbert and her husband Jeff of Hendersonville; he was “Papaw” to eleven grandchildren; six great grandchildren with two “on the way”; five sisters, Allie Mae Stepp, Martha Eaton, Marguerite Young, Linda Murdoch, Grace Young; two brothers, Clifton Young and Marion Young and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, May 17, 2015 at In Jesus Name Church with Rev. Dale Gilbert officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Jack L. Gates, 91

Jack L. Gates, 91, of Hendersonville, passed away Monday, May 11, 2015 at Spring Arbor West.
A native of Long Beach CA and a resident of Henderson County for 8 years he was a son of the Charles and Eva Gates. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Dowd Gates who died in 1998; son, Jim Gates; brothers, and Jimmy and Gordon Gates.
Jack retired from Texaco Oil Co. after 356 years of employment and was a member of the Anointed Word Church. He served in the U.S Army in the South Pacific area during WWII as a decoder.
He was known for his sense of humor and his love for the Lord, his love for his family and his church family. He belonged to a shuffle board club. He donated many times to Interfaith Ministry and encouraged others to donate in letters to the paper. He loved the trip he made to Washington DC with the Honor Air flight.
Survivors include his daughter, Carol Barnes of Hendersonville; son, Chris Gates and his wife Debbie of Hendersonville; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Glenn Gates and his wife Dixie of CA; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 16, 2015 at the Anointed Word Church in Hendersonville.

Terry Lee Moore, 62,

Terry Lee Moore, 62, of Dana, NC went to be with the Lord, Monday, May 11, 2015 at the Elizabeth House.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County and
was preceded in death by his parents, William and Doris Greene Moore and
two brothers, Don Moore and Dennis Moore.

He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Teresa Nalley
Moore; three children, Michael Nalley of Penrose, Kristy Nalley of
Hendersonville, Franklin Moore and his wife Nickee of Dana; four
grandchildren, Karisa Jones, William Brown, Xavier Brown and Toni Moore.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, May 16th from 2:00
PM until 5:00 PM at the Hendersonville Elks Lodge #1616 on Justice
Street.

Cindy Owens, 54

Cindy Owens, 54, of Etowah passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2015 surrounded by friends and family at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock after a short battle with cancer.
Born in Henderson County, she was the daughter of Doug Owens of Etowah and Tina Owens of Forest City. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Melissa Fay Smith.
Cindy attended Etowah Elementary School and was a 1979 graduate of West Henderson High School. She was employed by the local Ingles’ markets and was a member of the Etowah United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, Cindy is survived by her son, Christopher “Crow” Smith; four brothers, Steve Owens, Timmy Owens, Troy Thomas and David Thomas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 PM Saturday at Etowah United Methodist Church with the Reverends David Cook and Keith Norris officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Forest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 PM Friday at Shuler Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the Etowah Lions Club.
