G. Carol P. Lawrence, 81, of Hendersonville, NC went to be with the Lord Sunday, February 22, 2015 at the Elizabeth House with her loving family by her side.
She born and raised in Buncombe County and had lived in Henderson County for over 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Lawrence and her parents, Hubert and Lavada Dockery Pressley. She retired from Ball Corporation after 20 years of service and was of the Baptist Faith. She loved to sew and cook.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan Alfaro and her husband Martin of Hendersonville; two sons, Thomas Lawrence and his wife Marie of Rutherfordton and Jerry Lawrence and his wife Sandra of Fletcher; two sisters, Mary Francis Bradley and her husband Charles of Swannanoa and Dorothy Sharpe of Asheville; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 4:00 PM Thursday, February 26, 2015 at the Chapel In The Pines of Jackson Funeral Service with Rev. Keith Dockins officiating. Ms. Ernestine "Teena" Holmes, 87

Hendersonville – Ms. Ernestine "Teena" Holmes, age 87, passed away peacefully Friday morning, February 20, 2015, at The Elizabeth House in Flat Rock. Teena was a long term resident of Lake Point Landing. She was the daughter of Omer and Emma Hill of Huntsville, Alabama. She is survived by her son, Rick Holmes and his wife Claire, of Hendersonville, her three grandchildren, Samantha and Emma Holmes of Hendersonville, and Bubba Holmes of Tallahassee, Florida, her brother Donald Hill and her sister, LouJean Hill both of Huntsville, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her son, Micky Holmes of Tuscaloosa, and her brothers Miles and Wayland Hill of Huntsville.

Charles M. Gordon, 40, Hendersonville, NC went to be with our precious Lord on Wednesday, February 18, 2015. He is preceded in death by his loving "Moma", Allie Gordon.

He is survived by his father, Charles "Pete" Gordon of Hendersonville; brothers, Roy Fisher, Robert Fisher and wife Sharon and Franklin Quick; sisters, Deborah Humphries and husband Martin, Sheila Israel and husband Jason, Patricia Kitchen and husband Micah, Rosie Edmonds and husband Ricky and Syondra Howard and husband Dana.

He had several nieces and nephews including his little buddies, Jake, Cody, his shortie-Ally and his little man Jonathan.

He was a dedicated employee of Carolina Village. He loved his job and co-workers. He thought of his co-workers as family.

He had a heart of gold, always lending a helping hand and always joking and trying to bring laughter to others. His laughter was contagious. He loved animals, his favorite being wolves. He was protective of his family and friends, loved by many and will be forgotten by none.

Services will be held at the Chapel In The Pines of Jackson Funeral Service Wednesday, February 25, 2015. Visitation will be from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. The funeral will follow. Brother Robert Fisher will officiate.

Spencer Weldon Reid, 87

Spencer Weldon Reid, 87, of Saluda, NC passed away Thursday, February 19, 2015 at St. Lukes Hospital.

He was preceded in death by a son, Stewart B. Reid, his parents, Claude and Ethel Hayes Reid, two brothers, Albert and Charles and two sisters, Patsy Case and Marsha Nell Reid.

He served in the US Army, taught school at Polk, Buncombe and Transylvania Counties before retiring in 1982.

Spencer was the sole survivor of the Saluda Charter Members of the Saluda Lions Club, was of the Baptist Faith and faithfully attended Tryon 2nd Baptist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Isabel Bradley Reid; a son, Gary S. Reid and his wife Melanie of Saluda; two brothers, Hilton H. Reid and Robert Lee Reid and his wife Dottie all of Brevard; a sister, Georgia Ann Reid Fowler and her husband Adrian of Cashiers; two grandchildren, Samantha Reid Richardson and her husband Matthew and their children, Devon and Jordan of Forest City and Dusty Webb of Arden and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, February 22, 2015 at the Tryon 2nd Baptist Church with Dr. Dennis Jones and Rev. Lynn Stewart officiating. Burial will follow at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church.

Christopher Eugene "Gene" Staton, Jr., 80

Christopher Eugene "Gene" Staton, Jr., age 80, died February 17, 2015 surrounded by his family at his home, Brookland. He was born in Hendersonville in 1934 to Christopher Eugene Staton, Sr. and Helen McGraw Staton. Gene graduated from Hendersonville High School and the University of Georgia where he received his Bachelor of Business Administration. He was a member of the Chi Phi Social Fraternity. He received his Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of North Carolina at Asheville and was inducted into the Phi Alpha Theta honors society.

After college, Gene made a living in construction and development. He was co-owner of C.E. Staton General Contractor and was responsible for constructing homes and commercial buildings. After several years working at First Federal, he retired from First Citizens Bank. His lifelong passion was historic preservation and studying the connection between Charleston and the early settlement of Flat Rock. He spent many years devoted to the restoration and preservation of his home Brookland, and the history of its owners. Throughout his life he volunteered and served on the boards of the following: Henderson County Public Library, Pardee Memorial Hospital, Historic Flat Rock, Inc., and the Dispute Settlement Center. For several years he served on the vestry of St. John in the Wilderness and was Senior Warden. He was also a volunteer for the Back Pack Program at the church. After a diagnosis of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, he participated in pharmaceutical studies at the Medical University of South Carolina.
He married Deborah Elinor Holmes at St. John in the Wilderness on October 13,1967. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Chip Staton and his wife Cynthia of Hendersonville NC, his daughters Katherine Holloway and her husband John of Englewood, NJ and Susan Maday and her husband Michael of Somerville, MA. He is also survived by his 5 grandsons, Johnny, Moses, and Langston Holloway and Porter and Ellis Maday.
The funeral service will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at St. John in the Wilderness. Internment in the cemetery will follow. A reception will be held immediately after in the Parish House. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Back Pack Program at St. John in the Wilderness or Four Seasons Compassion for Life.

George Lee Howell, 92

George Lee Howell, age 92, of Hooper's Creek went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Goldsboro on July 26, 1922, the son of the late Moody Ashley and Cova Bagwell Howell. In addition to his parents, Mr. Howell was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Florence Glaspy Howell; his three sisters, Mildred Williams, Margaret Melton, and John Ann Barnhill; as well as by his brother, W.D. "Dub" Howell.

Mr. Howell and his family moved to the Hooper's Creek community when he was 16 years old and he was a graduate of Fletcher High School. He was an independent truck driver for North State Motor Lines for 30 years and he was employed for 20 years with Fletcher Chevrolet and BMW Dealership as their first BMW automotive technician. Even after his retirement he continued to and enjoyed helping the dealership by driving the courtesy vehicle as well as picking up and delivering parts, often faster than any one else. He served as the Registrar of the Board of Elections in the Hooper's Creek community for many years.

Mr. Howell always had a positive attitude; he never met a stranger and would always help anyone in need. He was a hard worker throughout his life and was a loving and devoted father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. He always believed in and encouraged each of his children and each member of his family. He loved to tinker and was an avid hunter. He loved the Lord, little babies, horses and animals, and he enjoyed cars, trucks, and NASCAR, as long as they were Chevrolet's or BMW's. He always enjoyed Sirius XM radio listening to Willie's Roadhouse. He was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his four children, Vera Paris and her husband, Virgil of Flat Rock, Dennis Howell and his wife, Sue of Hendersonville, Donna Vance and her husband, Dan of Fletcher, Keith Howell of Fletcher; his brother, Kenneth Howell and his wife, Pat of Princeton; his seven grandchildren, Jamie Worthy (Roger), Lorna Ramsey (David), Denise Beasley (Chad) all of Hendersonville, Cindy Meyers (Ken) of Candler, Alan Reaves (Selena) of Sims, NC, Denise Riddle (Andrew) of Flat Rock, Brandon Paris (Shannon) of Asheville; eight great-grandchildren, Anthony Kerr, Ryan Worthy (Brooke), Haley Leeke, Ella Riddle, Lillian Riddle, Abbie Kate Riddle, Alicia Claire Riddle, Brittany Bennett Poythress (Thomas); and his great-great-grandson, Mason Worthy.

The funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Sunday, February 22, 2015 in the Mausoleum Chapel of Shepherd Memorial Park with the Reverend Donnie Walker. Burial will follow the service in Shepherd Memorial Park. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service.

Teresa Cantrell Roberts, 40

Teresa Cantrell Roberts, age 40, of Hendersonville died Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at Mission Hospital following a sudden illness. She was born in Henderson County on May 13, 1974 to the late Stanley and Anna Burns Cantrell.

Teresa enjoyed working in her flower gardens, traveling, going to the beach, and cooking. She loved animals and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was employed with Mission Hospital as a CNA for many years.

She is survived by her husband, with whom she spent 15 wonderful years, Paul Roberts; her three children, Tricia Swabe and her husband, Noah, Michael Ward, Stacy Ward; her four grandchildren, Natalie, Scarlet, Walker, and Cadence; as well as by her three sisters, Tammy Howard, Cindy Rivers, and Christy Cantrell.

The funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday February 22, 2015 in Thos. Shepherd’s Church Street Chapel. Burial will follow the service in Saluda City Cemetery. Ken loved to camp, he and his wife owned and operated Mountain Camper Sales in Hendersonville
and he drove a school bus for North Henderson High School.
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Doris Elizabeth Vaughn, three sons, Kenneth Jay

Robert Gordon Wick, 90

Robert Gordon Wick, 90, former manager of Berkeley Mills, died Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Carolina Village Medical Center.
He was born on January 21, 1925 in Duluth, MN and was a son of the late Oscar Carl and Inga Johnson Wick. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Clarence and Harold Wick. He graduated from Duluth Central High School and attended the University of Minnesota earning degrees in Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering. He served in the Navy during WWII.
He worked for Kimberly - Clark for 38 years and held various managerial positions in engineering, production and administration. During his employment, he was awarded a Sloan Fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he earned a Masters Degree in Industrial Management. He served as Mill Manager of Berkeley Mills in Hendersonville from 1968 to 1972 and again from 1982 to 1984. He was the Mill Manager of the Lakeview and Badger Globe Mills in Neenah, WI from 1972 to 1982. In 1984, he was assigned the responsibility of construction, manning, and start up of a new manufacturing facility in Lexington, NC. He retired in 1986 and moved back to Hendersonville.
He was a member of the Rotary Club, Masonic Order, Elks Club, Eagles, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and the Hendersonville Country Club. While living in Memphis, TN from 1951 to 1965, he was active in the Sports Car Club of America serving as Regional Executive in 1960 and 1961. He was active in road rallies, races, autocross and gymkhanas. Driving a Corvette, he won the prestigious 5 State Rally in 1964 covering some 700 miles of back roads and logging trails through the mid-south. He loved building and flying of model airplanes from a young age, and was a charter member of clubs in Appleton, WI and Memphis, TN. He was a member of the Henderson County Flyers.
In Hendersonville, he served on the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Blue Ridge Community College, The United Way, Margaret Pardee Memorial Hospital and the Community Foundation.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Maree; a daughter, Sally Stevens of Flat Rock; three sons - Jeffrey Wick, (Patti) of Carolina Beach, NC, and Richard Wick, (Nancy) of Duncanville, TX and Peter Wick of Appleton, WI; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, February 19, 2015 at the Carolina Village Hall.

A native of Henderson County, he was born July 27, 1970. He was the son of John and Carolyn Edmundson of Mills River. Barry was a graduate of West Henderson High School. He was preceded in death by a brother Keith Edmundson and maternal grandfather, Lige Franklin of Mills River, NC.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Teri Edmundson, a son, Russell and a step son Liam Carney of Kingston, NC, one sister, Leisa Stack of Greer, S.C and maternal grandmother, Naomi Franklin of Mills River, NC.

Barry was of the Baptist faith. He was much loved and will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.

Mrs. Delane Freeman Edney, 99

Mrs. Delane Freeman Edney age 99 of Apple Valley Road, Edneyville, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2015 at her residence surrounded by her family.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County and graduate of Edneyville High School. She was a member of the Anderson Chapel Church of God of the Abrahamic Faith. She was the devoted wife of the late Lloyd Glenn Edney whom she lovingly cared for during his long battle with Parkinson's disease. She was also preceded in death by her six brothers and six sisters, and also a son in law, Ervin Hoots.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother (Nanny) who dearly loved her family and treasured the times spent together. She was a 40+ year breast cancer survivor. She was a strong woman; she loved life, had a quick wit and always loved to laugh. She recently celebrated her 99th birthday with a big party where she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and she was looking forward to celebrating her 100th. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Her legacy will live on through the lives of those remaining.

She is survived by one son, Hal Edney and his wife Frances Young Edney, one daughter Frances Hoots, one grandson, Brently Edney and his wife June, one granddaughter Lori Gonce and her husband Douglas, two great grandsons, Austin Edney and Kyle Gonce and his fiancé Ashlee Sims and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank her three excellent caregivers: Barbara Burrell, Melva Lively, and Patty Laughter for the love and care they provided. A special thank you to Dr. Hansel and his wonderful staff for the excellent care and concern they provided. We would also like to thank the Edneyville Fire Department for their dedication to the community and their support and assistance over the last few years.

Robert "Bob" Carroll Winn, age 89, of Hendersonville, passed away February 12, 2015.Born in Birmingham, AL to the late Roland and Leonetta Winn, he was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Estelle Witt Winn and daughter, Barbara Winn.

He is survived by his two sons, William "Bill" Winn of Maryville, TN, and John Carter Winn of Osceola, MO; grandchildren Melissa Winn Webb and Amanda Winn Painter both of Maryville, TN, and Tawnya Winn and Kyle Winn, both of Alamogordo, NM; eight great-grandchildren; and many cousins.

Bob honorably served his country in the Navy during World War II, and after his service he worked for GE. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hendersonville, and in his retirement very much enjoyed playing golf with his friends at Hendersonville Country Club and taking long walks with his dog.

The family would like to especially thankthe staff and caregivers at Carolina Village Medical and Care Centers for their care and support of the Winn family over the years.

Stewart Ellwood Allen

Stewart Ellwood Allen died peacefully on February 7, 2015, under Hospice care and in the presence of his two surviving children and their spouses. He was almost 92. Born in Ohio in 1923, he was the son of the late F. Ellwood and Dorothy S. Allen and was also preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Rudisill; daughter, Karen Peck; and sisters, Jean Bird and Anne Allen.

He spent many happy summer days at his grandparents' cottage on Put-In-Bay. He enjoyed being at or near the water for his entire life. The family moved to Washington, DC in 1935 and to New York in 1938, when the National Recreation Association retained his father, Ellwood, as their Chief Planner. Stewart graduated from Manhasset (LI) High School in 1940 and attended Massachusetts State (now UMass) until the beginning of World War II, completing two years there before going to work for Gibbs and Cox at the Federal Drydock in New Jersey tracing wires and pipes and documenting the final stages of construction of destroyers for the US Navy.

He was drafted into the Army in 1942 and, despite being employed in the defense industry and eligible for deferment, he chose to serve. His military service brought him additional schooling at Clarkson College of Technology. Serving in the infantry in the First Division, he fought in the battle of Aachen, the Battle of Hurtgen Forest, and the Battle of the Bulge. He made friends with a family in Aubel, Belgium at that time which lasted a lifetime and crossed generations of both families. He corresponded for years with the family of a fallen comrade and kept the memory of their son alive. Like many of his generation, he did not talk of his war service until late in his life. Under Jeff Miller's leadership and thanks to fundraising by the people of Hendersonville, Stewart was on the first ever Honor Air flight to Washington, DC and the World War II Memorial, and that flight meant the world to him. He was one of the participants featured in the Honor Air documentary that received national TV coverage.

Stewart and his father formed The Allen Organization in 1945 as an expansion of the recreation planning work that Ellwood had done in the public sector. This first of its kind consulting firm helped private industry, cities and towns establish meaningful long range plans to serve the recreation needs of their people. Stewart served on the Board of the National Parks and Recreation Association and received numerous awards for his long service in the field of recreation including an award of Excellence for the Coal Street Park Ice Skating facility in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Despite all of the national recognition, he was most proud of receiving the Theresa Brungardt Award for Service to Recreation and Parks in Vermont. His passion and vision for making places for all of us to have access to healthy outdoor recreation lives on in neighborhoods and communities across the country. He wrote and published a book on how to combine the public sector and private enterprise to make parks financially sustainable.

After the war, he found the love of his life, Sarah Rudisill of Marshall, NC who was working in upstate New York. They married in 1948 and raised three children, Karen, Deborah, and Craig in Pownal and Bennington, VT. They grew vegetables and found ways to make ends meet while keeping a creaky old farmhouse warm and homey. They saved to put all of their children through college and give them a good start in life. They hosted Fulbright Scholars and international students and those friendships too continue across generations. They retired to Western North Carolina in 1983. Sarah and Stewart travelled the world and loved visiting the National Parks of the US and Canada.

Community service was an integral part of Stewart's life. He served on many community, church, and school boards and was Chair of the Bennington School District where he was very active in promoting the Union High School concept that became Mount Anthony. He was President of the Bennington Rotary Club. In Hendersonville he served as a volunteer guide at the Carl Sandburg Home and at The North Carolina Arboretum. He was President of the Lake Pointe Landing Residents Association for a total of six years, finishing his last term just this past December.

Stewart had a passion for coin collecting and ran a small numismatic business in VT for several years. He was a dowser without ever questioning how it worked, and it worked for him. At the age of 60 he took up walking to take off a few holiday pounds, and it turned into a passion that led him to a goal of walking the distance around the world at the Equator, 24,902 miles. He completed that walk in 2000, despite being waylaid for a time by triple bypass surgery. Most recently, his walking companion was his Boston terrier Tiger, a dog with a heart of gold (and a will to disobey!).

Music and theatre were woven throughout Stewart's life from early family plays to recent dramatic readings in retirement, and he briefly seriously considered acting as a career. He was always a "ham." He loved Broadway musicals and got to see many of the great performers and plays while living in or visiting New York. There was always a song on his lips and that carries through to his children and their children.

Stewart was a voracious reader who also loved to write. At the age of 89 he completed and self-published a 100 page Memoir that told of his early life through the time he moved to North Carolina. He had an amazing memory for detail, and his mind remained lively and active until the end.

Stewart was devoted to his family and friends and loved sharing a cup of coffee and talking about big and small issues. Strangers were always unmet friends whom he greeted with a smile and a twinkle, and he reached out to those who suffered hardship or loss. His greatest delight was getting people to smile. Beloved by many for his warmth, generosity, and sense of humor, he will be missed by all those privileged to know and love him.

Stewart would have never made it this far without the love and attention of his caregivers, especially Rhonda Harmon, Sherri Griffith, Sherry Helms, Donna Horne and Susie-Q Aruffo, and his friends from his community at Lake Point Landing.

He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Allen and her husband Howard Schein of Urbana, Il; son, Craig Allen and his wife Lynne of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Jennifer Kauffmann and her husband Jeffrey, Cassandra Allen, Stevie Schein, and Zoe Schein; great-grandchild, Morgan Dowling; sister, Barbara Kennedy and her husband John of Ithaca, NY.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 pm, Friday, February 13, 2015 at Lake Pointe Landing Retirement Community in the Smoky Mountain Theater, 333 Thompson St, Hendersonville, NC 28792. The family will receive friends following Stewart's service.

Ruth Pauline Rhodes, 87

Ruth Pauline Rhodes, 87 of Hendersonville went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday February 10, 2015 from Pardee Hospital.
A native of Henderson County, she was the daughter of the late Otto and Ola Mae Capps Owens Jr. and wife of the late Vaughn Rhodes. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Owens and Wayne Owens, three sisters, Brenda Lanning, Lillian Short and Darla Owens.
She was a member of Barker Heights Baptist Church. Family was important to her and she was a wonderful mother, grandmother and a good homemaker.
Survivors include; one daughter Margaret Rhodes Osteen and her husband Dwight of Hendersonville, one brother Eddie Owens and his wife Mary Anna of Hendersonville, two grandchildren, Tammy Summey and her husband Craig of Hendersonville and Christopher Osteen of Hendersonville, two great grandchildren, Kyle Seelig and Joshua Summey of Hendersonville and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Friday February 13, 2015 at 11 AM at Barker Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Owens officiating. Burial will follow the service at.
The family will receive friends on Thursday night from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at The Chapel in the Pines of Jackson Funeral Service.

Dorthula "Dot" Summerall Bailey, 85

Dorthula "Dot" Summerall Bailey, 85, of Hendersonville, died Monday, February 09, 2015, at Cherry Springs Village. A native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, she was a daughter of the late James and Ruby Summerall and wife of the late William Bailey who died in 2014. She was employed by Kyocera for over 20 years, retiring in 1994, and was a member of Stoney Mountain Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Vivian Johnson and Vera Lee Summerall and one brother Tommy Summerall.

Surviving are two sons, James "Bo" Mills of Arden and Michael Ray Mills of Hendersonville; two stepsons, Jimmy and Joey Bailey and their families of Weaverville, NC; several grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews; a sister, Ann Phillips and husband Charles of Hendersonville, NC.

David Allen Buckner, 58

David Allen Buckner of Hendersonville, 58, died Thursday, February 6, 2015 at Duke University Hospital. He was the son of the late Mildred and Garnett Buckner.

David worked for Printpak for 38 years. He was also a member of Mud Creek Church. He is survived by: his twin brother Danny Buckner, a brother Wayne Buckner and his wife Aline, sister Carol Kentopp and sister Judy Hedrick and her husband Kenny.
