James Douglas Tweed, 89

James Douglas Tweed, 89

James Douglas Tweed, 89, of Hendersonville, died Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at Mission Hospital in Asheville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Terry Lee and Madra Marie Renner Tweed. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by four siblings: Gene Tweed, Vincent Tweed, Betty Jane Snyder and Vivian Melton.

A member of our greatest generation, James was honored to enlist in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. On February 19, 1945, he participated in the American amphibious invasion of Iwo Jima, Japan. His marine division was one of only three Marine divisions that landed on the island that fateful day. Despite very difficult conditions, and over a month of continuous fighting, James and his fellow Marines were able to witness our U.S. flag being raised in victory in Iwo Jima. James enjoyed corresponding with numerous "pen pals" while serving his country. One he particularly enjoyed was Marion Cagle. He returned home safely, married Marion on March 29, 1946. They promptly settled down in Hendersonville where James worked and lived his entire life.

James realized at a very early age that God had given him a talent to not only repair wood furniture, but to design and create anything from wood. James and his late brother, Vincent owned and operated Tweed's Furniture Store in Hendersonville for years. The Tweed name in Hendersonville exemplified honesty, integrity, as well as excellent quality furniture. Later on, they opened Tweed's Flur as James enjoyed installing carpet and vinyl flooring as well. He also spent endless hours of work in St. John-in-the-Wilderness Church crafting the chancel in the church. Although he officially retired in 1990, he was always eager to lend a helping hand. James was of the Baptist faith, and enjoyed attending Oak Grove Baptist Church. He never forgot his military background and remained active in the Marine Corps League. He was also a member of the Hedrick-Rhodes VFW Post #5206 and the American Legion Post #77 respectfully.

James is survived by his wife of over 68 years, Marion. Two sons: Terry Lee Tweed and his wife, Lyndia and Jaimy Tweed all of Hendersonville. Two Grandchildren: Heather Elizabeth Tweed Templeton and her husband, Matthew, of Asheville, and Jason Lee Tweed and his wife, Brandi of Arden. Five great grandchildren: Alena Elizabeth Templeton, Titus Hadden Templeton, Jocelyn Kathleen Templeton, Adyson Faith Tweed and Kinleigh Grace Tweed. He is also survived by one brother, Gary Tweed and his wife, Judy of Hendersonville and one sister, Jo Ann Cantrell of Black Mountain.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 29, 2014 at Shepherd Memorial Park with the Pastor Keith Sizemore officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Henderson County Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Oak Grove Baptist Church, 476 Oak Grove Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.

An online register book is available for family and friends by visiting www.thosshepherd.com. Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
