NRA makes endorsement in sheriff's race

In the latest volley in the endorsement war between Sheriff Charlie McDonald and challenger Erik Summey, McDonald announced that he had won the nod from the National Rifle Association's Political Victory Fund, the political action committee of the powerful run rights lobby.McDonald is the only current candidate for Henderson County Sheriff to receive this endorsement. He faces Summey and three-time candidate Michael Brown in Tuesday's Republican primary. Former Broward County sheriff's deputy Marty Katz faces no opposition for the Democratic nomination for the seat. "Sheriff McDonald, who recently received the ICAUCUS endorsement as well; was selected by the NRA based on his strong support of 2nd Amendment issues," the McDonald campaign said in a news release on Tuesday night. "Sheriff McDonald has demonstrated his 2nd Amendment convictions by streamlining the pistol purchase permit process at the Sheriff's Office, providing online application options, and shortening the turnaround time for applications. He is a staunch advocate of the Concealed Carry provisions of NC. His staff is known for their courteous, friendly, and professional demeanor in helping citizens through the process of obtaining their CCW permits."McDonald said in a statement: "I appreciate the National Rifle Association for its commitment to educate citizens and in helping defend our citizens Right to keep and Bear Arms. I especially appreciate their recognition of my record of support of second amendment rights through this endorsement."Two weeks ago Summey, who is the Fletcher police chief, won the endorsement from the Mountain Chapter of the PBA and on Sunday Fletcher Mayor Bill Moore endorsed him.   Read Story »
