Symphony to return to HHS stage in new season

Three masterworks concerts, two chamber orchestra concerts and the annual holiday music celebration highlight the 2023-24 season of the Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra, the symphony announced. The HSO will also return for two concerts on the same stage where it first performed more than 50 years ago, the Hendersonville High Auditorium.

Under the leadership of Music Director John Young Shik Concklin, the orchestra will perform a tribute to its beloved former Music Director Thomas Joiner in its opening concert of the season on Sept. 30.

Joiner has been an integral part of the HSO for over two decades. This promises to be an unforgettable evening of music, featuring the timeless classics of Beethoven Piano Concerto no 3, Suite from Schindler’s List, Romeo & Juliet and Fantasy Overture. The program, chosen from Dr. Joiner’s favorites, will also feature soloist Dianna Joiner on violin and Douglas Weeks on piano.
“It's an honor for us to celebrate Mr. Joiner's incredible contribution to our orchestra for so many years, said Paul Conroy, HSO's executive director. “We can't wait to share this incredible concert with the Hendersonville music community”.
The season’s second concert on Nov. 18, switches the newly remodeled Hendersonville High Auditorium for the Chamber Orchestra concert, Strings Attached II. One of the highlights of this evening will be Bach's famous Brandenburg Concerto no. 6, where the under-heralded violas will finally get their moment to shine.
On Dec. 3, 2023, the musicians perform Holiday at the Movies, featuring music from all your favorite holiday movies. From classic tunes to modern hits, this program will have something for everyone.
The season continues in the spring with Hope and Promise on March 9. This concert will be an unforgettable evening of music including Schumann's Piano Concerto, a masterpiece filled with hope, joy, and optimism for the future. The concert will begin with Chevalier de St. Georges' virtuosic 2nd Symphony, followed by Schubert's enigmatic Unfinished Symphony.
On April 13, Spring Awakens will bring an enchanting evening of music to the stage, featuring Dvorak's Symphony no 8 and Weber's Oberon Overture.
In its final performance of the season returns to the Hendersonville High Auditorium on May 25, for a whimsical show. First up is the always affable and mischievous Mozart, with his Sinfonia Concertante for four solo woodwinds. Then, local composer Peter Kay has a theatrical ode of Appalachia. Rounding out the concert will be Haydn's Farewell Symphony, where the orchestra leaves the stage, one by one until one final musician is left to take a bow.
