VFW sponsors screening of 'Pork Chop Hill' on Nov. 9

VFW Post 5206 is sponsoring a screening of Pork Chop Hill, the 1959 movie that tells the story of a major Korean War battle in 1953, in honor of Veterans Day. The film will be shown at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, in the Kaplan Auditorium of the public library, 301 N. Washington St.

U.S. Army Maj. Bob Johnson (ret.), a military historian, will introduce the movie, which is based on the leadership of Col. Joe Clemons, a former Henderson County resident. Clemons is played by Gregory Peck. The movie also featured Rip Torn, George Peppard, Robert Blake, Martin Landau and other stars renowned at the time or later in their film careers. Clemons received the Distinguished Service Cross, second only to the Medal of Honor, for his actioons as a platoon leader during the Battle of Triangle Hill in 1952. He died in Hendersonville on May 15, 2018, at age 90.
