Everette Adam Summey, 34

Everette Adam Summey, 34, of Hendersonville died Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, after a courageous battle with heart disease.

He was born on June 20, 1979, in Henderson County to Everette Robert Summey and Kathy Grindstaff Summey.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Cloyd and Margaret Grindstaff; and paternal grandfather, Reginald E. Summey, as well as, his two sisters, Tanya and Tonya Summey.

Everette was a graduate of East Henderson High School. He worked at Samovar Restaurant with his mom and dad for over 15 years, and for the Selee Corporation. He was the second recipient of the L-VAD machine that was miraculously implanted at Duke University Medical Center more than 4 years ago. During Adam's many trips to the medical campus he was an avid speaker to prospective recipiants of the implant. His positive outlook inspired all who knew him. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his daughter, Lillian, of the home; one sister, Angela Summey; as well as his paternal grandmother, Dullie Josephine Phillips, all of Hendersonville.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery with Reverend Martin Mathis officiating.

Kathleen McGaha Thompson, 75

Kathleen McGaha Thompson, 75, of Hendersonville passed away Monday, Nov.  4, 2013, after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Transylvania County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wade and Winnie Patterson McGaha and a son, Wendell Lee Thompson.

She had worked at the Hendersonville Country Club and Henderson County Department of Social Services.

Kat was a happy person even while sick and was a great mother, grandmother and friend.

She is survived by two sons, Jack Warren of Concord and David Thompson of Forest City; nine grandchildren, Brandy Netherton, Brandon, Brendon, Chris, Gregg and Brad Thompson, Andrew Justice, Carter and Sydney Warren; seven great grandchildren, Brooke and Jessica Netherton, Avery, Caleb, Carson, Aubrey and Kala Thompson and two long time friends, Sue Banks and Geneva Galloway.

A memorial service will be held  p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013, at the Hillside Commons Community Center with Jack Warren officiating.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Pardee Hospital, Hendersonville Health and Rehab and the Elizabeth House.

Jennifer Elizabeth Bradley, 40

Jennifer Elizabeth Bradley, 40, of Hendersonville, went to be with the Lord after a long battle
with cancer on Thursday, November 7, 2013.

She was a native of Henderson County but spent some of her life in Florida. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Jean Barrett, her paternal grandmother, Alice Clara Whiteside and step-father, William Martin.

Jennifer was a daughter, sister, granddaughter and mother. She loved life and loved people. She never met a stranger. She had a beautiful heart and spirit. She was of the Baptist faith and loved God.

Jennifer graduated from Heritage Hall in 1991. Jennifer worked in the customer service field doing retail, home health, mental health, plant work, as well as pet grooming and was a waitress.

She is survived by her father, Frankie Bradley; her mother, Sandra Purro; her fiancé, Tim Gunter; her paternal grandfather, Joe Whiteside; brothers, Barrett Martin and Michael Purro; sister, Alexandra Purro; a special woman she considered a step-mom, Kathy Martin; three children whom she loved more than life; Taylor Bradley, Savanna Bradley and Tre Bradley and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.

A celebration of Jennifer's life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, 2013, at the Chapel In The Pines of Jackson Funeral Service with Chaplain Jane McKown officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the chapel and at other times will be at the home of Stacy Hall, 125 Stepp Road, Hendersonville.

Thomas C. Graves

ETOWAH — Thomas Charles Graves, 90, of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Etowah, died on Nov. 1, 2013, at his daughter Laura's home in Jupiter Farms, Fla.

Tom was born Aug. 15, 1923 in Chattanooga, Tenn., to the late Thomas B. and Vivian H. Hannah. He spent his childhood in Chattanooga, Tenn. and Dalton, Ga.

In 1943, Tom interrupted his college career to serve his country during World War II. He

was with the 69th Infantry Division (F Co., 273rd Infantry Regiment) and saw heavy combat in Europe from 1944-1945, participating in the Battle of the Bulge, and was a part of the group that first met up with the Russians at the Elbe River. In April 1945, he was severely wounded in Leipzig, Germany, and hospitalized for a year of recovery. Once released, he returned to his beloved Daytona Beach, Fla., where he continued his rehabilitation in the sand and surf. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman Badge. After surviving the harsh conditions at the Battle of the Bulge, he vowed never to live in a cold climate, and he never did.

He resumed his education at John B. Stetson University in DeLand, Fla., and graduated with a degree in business administration in 1948. Shortly after, he began work as a Deputy Collector for the Internal Revenue Service in Miami, Daytona Beach and Jacksonville, Fla., covering his territory in his un-air conditioned Volkswagen Beetle. While in Jacksonville, Fla., he met his future wife, Genevieve "Jean" Lide. They married in Coral Gables, Fla., in 1949.

In 1954, Tom moved his growing family to the Hillcrest neighborhood, across from Vedado Park in West Palm Beach, Fla. He was promoted to group manager for the West Palm Beach IRS office. In 1962, the family moved "way out in the boondocks" to Lake Clarke Shores, Fla., where they created a lifetime of memories, boating, barbecuing and having awesome parties. Jean was the perfect mom who was room Mom, Troop Leader, Southern Cook, Animal Rescuer and Shopper, while Tom worked hard to provide for his family, and spent every minute he could in the garage with his many car projects, and spending time outside in the yard

In 1985, they finally realized their dream and bought a 6-1/2 acre Christmas tree farm in the beautiful mountains of Etowah, where they spent every summer. Tom's definition of a good day was riding that tractor in his field, taking a nap and then enjoying a glass of wine with Jean on the deck he built. They surrounded themselves with beautiful trees and flowers, and nurtured the wildlife that embraced them. For 17 years they created memories with friends and family who visited their paradise. When Jean died in 2002, Tom continued to go to their farm until his health prevented him from returning.

Tom lost his treasured sister, Betty June, in 1950 and his beloved wife Jean ("his girl") in 2002.

Tom leaves behind his three children: one son, David, and his wife, Jeanne of Danbury, Conn., two daughters: Deborah McCarty and her husband, Chris, of Highland Beach, Fla., and Laura Graves and her husband, Cliff Gordon, of Jupiter Farms, Fla. Three grandchildren: Emily Graves, James Renard and his beloved caretaker, Dylan Gordon, as well as his brother, Bill Graves and his wife, Joan. Nieces and nephews: Betsy Graves Myers, Shannon Graves, Phil Randall and his wife, Mary Ann and Dick Randall and his wife, Pat; five great-nieces and nephews, and his godson, Scott Stevens; as well as many friends who will continue to treasure the memory of this fine man for the years to come.

For your kindness shown to us, a special thank you to all the people who helped Tom live such a long life including, Lisa Key, our Angel on Earth who treated him like a father and was by his side for the last 14 months loving and caring for him. Dad, you were loyal, fair, kind, humble and a man of integrity. You left this world a whole lot better and we will miss your presence here. Whenever we see a tractor, a hammer, or wildlife, we will feel comforted. We carry you in our hearts.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, at Oakdale City Cemetery, with the Rev. Deacon Timothy Jones officiating. He will be laid to rest next to his wife, Jean. A luncheon in celebration of his life will be held immediately following the service at the Kenmure Country Club in Flat Rock.

A memorial service will be held at his home in Florida at a later date.

Edna Carney Fowler

Edna Carney Fowler, 89, of Hoopers Creek, known affectionately as "Queenie", "Mama", "Mamaw", and "Grandmother Wolf," went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 4, 2013, at 8:15 a.m.

She was born May 29, 1924, daughter of Ovid Lamar Carney, Jr. and Elsie Lanning Carney. She married George Newton Fowler on June 10, 1944, and had 69 years of a wonderful marriage and friendship.

Into this union were born two children: Dewena Fowler Garren (husband, Wayne) and Michael George Fowler (wife, Anna Lee); five grandchildren: Jennifer Garren, Cameron Garren (wife, Serita), Mathew Fowler, Melissa Fowler Warren, and Mark Fowler; and four great-grandchildren: James and Allyson Garren, Emily Hopkins, and Brandon Warren, and one great-great-grandchild, Ruby Garren.

Other grandchildren through marriage are: Steve Robbins (wife, Sarah), Jason Littrell (wife, Jenettie), and Kimberly Littrell McGuiness. Great-grandchildren through marriage are: Madisen Gentry, Caleb, Tori and Ethan Littrell, and Sydney Robbins.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Bill Carney, and a sister, Casciel Wilson. She is survived by a sister, Lillian Youngblood, of Hendersonville. She loved all of her extended family very much, including nephews, nieces and cousins, all precious to her, and more numerous than can be mentioned.

She was an expert seamstress who made beautiful clothing for herself, her children and her grandchildren. She worked for 38 years at Kellwood Company, beginning as a sewing machine operator and retiring as supervisor over the pattern department in 1986. She had a great love of poetry and could recite many of her favorite poems by heart. She was a beautiful woman who was deeply loved by those who knew her...and she will be deeply missed.

The family will receive friends at from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, at Fletcher First Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, 2013, at Fletcher First Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Roy Waldroup and Rev. Phillip Youngblood. Burial will follow in the Hooper's Creek Cemetery.

William Cyril Repetto, Jr.

William Cyril Repetto, Jr., 77, of Hendersonville died on Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, at the Elizabeth House.

A native of Ridgefield, N.J., he was born on June 19, 1936, to the late William Repetto, Sr. and Mary Ellen Smith Repetto.

A graduate of Columbia University he worked as advertising director of Hayden Publishing Company before retiring as publishing director of American Publishing in Philadelphia in 1998. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hendersonville and served his country in the United States Army in the Signal Communication Agency, Camp Zama, Japan.

He is survived by a special friend, Eleanor Meeker of Hendersonville; his four sons, William C. Repetto, III, Andrew J. Repetto, Michael J. Repetto, Vincent F. Repetto all of Philadelphia; his friend, Janet McConnell of Cumming, Ga.; his brother, Bruce E. Repetto of Mountclair, N.J.; and his eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013, in the Brunson Chapel at First United Methodist Church, Hendersonville, with Rev. Dan Martin officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Jerry Truhlar, 95

Jerry Truhlar, 95, of Hendersonville passed away Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at Carolina Village.

He was a native of New York City and was a son of the late Jaroslav and Anna Truhlar. He was a resident of Henderson County for more than 20 years.

While serving in the Army, Office of Secret Service, he was based in India. Mr. Truhlar graduated from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute with a BS in engineering. He was an electrical engineer and was employed by National Broadcasting Corporation before retiring.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Gladys Truhlar, sons; Mark Truhlar and wife, Kathleen Schader, Gary Truhlar, and Richard Truhlar and wife, Mary; grandchildren, Gregory Truhlar and wife, Lilly, Laura, Allison, Brian and Michael Truhlar.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home with Father Alex Viola officiating. Burial will be held at a later date.

John "Jack" Veitch

John "Jack" Veitch, 79, of Hendersonville died on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at the Elizabeth House.

A native of Chicago, he was born on March 9, 1934, to the late John and Elizabeth Veitch. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Merl Jean Veitch.

He attended St. Thomas College in Minnesota before serving his country in the United States Army in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a manufactures representative in electronics. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, enjoyed playing golf, traveling, listening to music and his cheering on his two beloved Chicago teams, the Bears and the White Sox.

He is survived by his wife, Valerie Veitch of Hendersonville; his two sons, Thomas Veitch and his wife, Linda, of Aurora, Ill., John Veitch and his wife, Kristin, of Oswego, Ill.; his nine grandchildren; his sister, Barbara Marshall and her husband, Robert, of La Grange, Ill; his step-children, Kelly Curley and her husband, Tim, Patrick McCauley and his wife, Heather, Michael McCauley; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Greg Williams and Pastor Ken Langsdorf officiating.

Fred H. King, 87

Fred H. King, 87, of Hendersonville died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013.

He was a son of the late Will and Carrie King and husband of the late Frances Pool King, his wife of 59 years

Mr. King served in the Army during World War II and graduated from Western Carolina University. He was a high school teacher and coach at Andrews High School, Marion Junior High School, Old Fort High School, Cherryville High School and East Henderson High School, retiring in 1984. Mr. King had resided in Henderson County for 40 years.

He is survived by his children, Douglas King and wife, Susan; Donna King; David King and wife, Linda; and Dennis King; grandchildren, Jared King and wife, Shawna; Kristin Kirby and husband, Todd; Tonya Turner; and Greg Gilbert; and great-grandchildren, Joshua King, Joseph King, Samantha King, Dustin Callahan and wife, Danika, and Laci Turner and husband, Chris.

The family will receive friends from 2 – 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3 at Shuler Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, at the West Marion United Methodist Church (632 Stroud Street, Marion, NC). The Reverend Philip Steppe will officiate. Burial with Military Honors will follow the service in the church cemetery.

Ronnie S. Huntley, 76, of Hooper's Creek died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, in his home.

He was a native of Henderson County. He was the son of the late Frank and Florence Huntley.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Linda W. Huntley; two sons, Steve Huntley and wife Beverly, Stan Huntley and wife Vivian; daughter Kim Banks and husband Tim; four grandchildren, Andy and Alex Banks and Amanda and Amber Huntley; two great grandchildren, Cassidy and Megan Banks and sister, Shirrey Devinney and husband Richard.

Services will be held Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 3 p.m. at Fletcher First Baptist Church. The Rev. Roy Waldroup and Rev. Richard Merck will officiate. Burial will follow in the Hooper's Creek Church Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Henderson County Honor Guard. The Patriot Guard Riders will be escorting Ronnie from the church to the cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church.

Vera Bell Wilson

Vera Bell Wilson, 85, of Mountain Home died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013 at the Elizabeth House after a brief illness.

A native of Henderson County, she was born on Nov. 1, 1927, to the late James E. Bell and Della Byrd Bell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John F. Wilson.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staffs at Brian Center and the Elizabeth House for their kindness and compassion in the care of Vera.

She is survived by her son, John D. Wilson of Mountain Home; two brothers, Albert Bell of Etowah, Earl Bell of Apex; and two sisters, Betty Snyder of Etowah and Beatrice Norris of Etowah.

Jayne Louise Knight O'Neal, 69

Jayne Louise Knight O'Neal, 69

Jayne Louise Knight O'Neal, 69, noted Hendersonville philanthropist and animal advocate, of Cummings Cove, passed away October 23, 2013 surrounded by her family and beloved pets.

Born in Southbridge, Mass., to Wilson and Louise Knight, she was raised in southern California and graduated from Monrovia High School. She attended Pasadena City College before becoming a flight attendant for National Airlines in Miami, Fla.

She was married to well-known Miami developer, including the development of Cummings Cove in Hendersonville, Maston Greene O'Neal for 28 years. Jayne never met a stranger and always helped others, but her passion in life was to help animals. She worked tirelessly for close to 30 years to raise money for the Blue Ridge Humane Society as a Board Member, chaired numerous fund raisers, was responsible for funding the Spay and Neutering Program and volunteered at the Humane Society thrift shop once a week. She also appeared on Channel 13 with Julie Wunder for the Pet Pals Adoption program.

Jayne leaves behind many friends and family members who will miss her smiling face and positive attitude she displayed throughout her long battle with cancer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Maston Greene O'Neal.

She is survived by her sister Cynthia K. Johnston and husband Jerry and nephew Jerry, Jr. of Montgomery, Texas; step-mother Miriam R. Knight of El Monte, Calif.; daughters Tracy Stewart and husband Fred of Atlanta, and Rory Beck of Kansas; and son Shane O'Neal of Texas; ten grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Pat O'Neal and wife Gayann of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and Hendersonville; cousins Ethelind Schwarts of S.C., Nancy Lawrence of Texas and Robert Knight of Mass.

A private memorial service will be held for close friends and family.

Alice Snow Strickland

Alice Snow Strickland

Alice Snow Strickland, 82, of Hendersonville passed away peacefully the morning of Oct. 29, 2013, at Sunnybrook Assisted Living, surrounded by the love of her entire family, as well as, the love of her "Sunnybrook family".

She was born on April 18, 1931, in Reidsville to the late John and Ruth Ferguson Snow. From a very young age she excelled both academically and athletically in school. During her senior year at Ruffin High School, Alice, who was nicknamed "Skeeter" by her friends, played on the State Championship winning Girl's Basketball Team. After graduating from the Baptist School of Nursing in Winston Salem, she began her nursing career at The Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem. One of her patient's included her future father- in -law, Mr. William H. Strickland, Sr.

In March of 1952, Alice met the love of her life, Dr. William H. Strickland, Jr., a medical student at Bowman Gray School of Medicine. They both knew that their lives would be forever joined as one when they took their marriage vows six months later on Sept. 29, 1952, in Winston Salem. After their marriage, being skilled in numerous fields of nursing she continued her career in private duty nursing and at Craig Air Force Base during her husband Bill's military service to our country. Alice and Dr. Strickland moved to Hendersonville in 1958.

She supported her husband of 60 years in his busy medical practice as they reared their four children. Alice was especially proud of the very close relationship with all of her grandchildren, who will treasure the happy memories they hold. Always a woman of strength and courage, Alice can be remembered for such events in the community like serving endless hours as a nurse during the aftermath of the 1967 Piedmont Airlines crash that claimed numerous lives as well as many Red Cross Blood Drives and other community events. She also became very active in numerous organizations including the Medical Wives Auxiliary Club, of which she was a past president of the local chapter, the Henderson County Junior League, the Hendersonville Country Club and the Hendersonville Cotillion Club. Members of the Cotillion will fondly remember the sparkle in her eyes as she and her husband handsomely made their way across the dance floor.

She is survived by her husband, William H. Strickland, MD; her four children, Donna Marie Strickland of Jupiter, Fla., William Keith Strickland and his wife, Marti, of Elon, Virginia Lynne Strickland of Hendersonville, and Dr. John Snow Strickland, DDS and his wife, Katie, of Hendersonville; seven grandchildren, Major William Phillip Pearsall, USAF, and his wife, Jennifer, Megan Marie Pearsall and her husband, Captain Anthony James Cannone, USAF, Meredith Brooks Strickland, Margaret Caroline Strickland, Kaitlyn Mabrey Capps, Royster Snow Strickland, Grace McKenzie Strickland; three great-grandchildren, Riley Jane Pearsall, Raegan Lee Pearsall, and Charles William Cannone.

At the family's request a private memorial service will be held.

Richard J. "Dick" Hora

Richard J. "Dick" Hora, 78, of Hendersonville, formerly of Parma, Ohio; Brunswick, Maine; San Diego; Norfolk, Va.; and several naval vessels, passed away on Monday, Oct. 28, 2013.

He was born on May 22, 1935, and raised by the late John A. and Marie M. Hora in Parma, Ohio.

After four years of service in the United States Navy, he met his future wife, Barbara Eppler, in English class at Baldwin Wallace College. He wasn't interested in English very much longer. Soon thereafter he re-enlisted and continued his naval career as an aviation electrician and instructor. His service ultimately spanned 26 years, 11 deployments, four continents, and every meridian of the globe except two. He retired in 1979 as a Master Chief Petty Officer. After moving to Hendersonville with his family following his retirement from the Navy, he began a second career as an electrician and tester at Westinghouse Corporation in Arden (now Eaton). He retired in 2000.

 

Dick enjoyed the bright sun of the beach, jazz music, taking care of his family, current events, NASCAR, his 24 pound Maine coon cat named "Awesome", political humor, bad TV, and a good polish sausage.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara, with whom he built a family of three daughters and seven grandchildren: Wendi Connelly of Hendersonville, grandsons, Patrick of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, and Ryan and Tim, and granddaughter, Kelly of Hendersonville; daughter, Amy McConnell and granddaughters, Allison and Tara of Virginia Beach, Va.; and daughter, Julie Williams, husband Charles, and son Ben of Mills River.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dan Martin officiating. A reception will follow. At a later date, his ashes will be both interred at the church and cast at sea from the deck of a Norfolk-based aircraft carrier, where Master Chief Hora is sure at least 5000 sailors will be thinking of him that day.

Dorothy Scott Vick, 87

Dorothy Scott Vick, 87, of Hendersonville passed away Monday, Oct. 28, 2013 at her home.

She was born March 19, 1926, in Macon County to the late George D. And Minnie C. Scott. There she spent her childhood. After finishing school and receiving her degree at High Point College she went into the teaching profession. In 1949 she married Rufus G. Vick, Agriculture Extension Agent in Clay County where they resided.
After the birth of their two children, she gave her time to family and home.

She was widowed at 38 with two small children, Mark 10 and Marie 7. Then they moved to Franklin. Her life was devoted to raising her children, both of which obtained a college degree. When they left home she became an avid church worker with women's organizations, Alter Guilds and bazaars. Her main interest was music (singing and piano), participating in church choirs (both choral and bell) and various choral groups in the community. She also enjoyed gardening and needle work which she shared generously with the church.

In 1993 she moved to Henderson County where she spent her elderly years.

William "Carnel" Lewis, 72

William "Carnel" Lewis, 72

William "Carnel" Lewis, 72, of Hendersonville went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Oct. 28, 2013.\

Born in Yancey County, he was the son of the late William Arthur Lewis and Martha Ann Lewis Edwards of Burnsville. He was also preceded in death by his son, Edgar "Scotty" Dean Lewis; two brothers, David Lewis and Eddie Wayne Lewis; a grandson, James Beck; and two great-nephews, Calob and Kade.

Carnel was an excellent printer, working for forty years at Cranston Print Works. He dedicated his love and time to his family. Carnel enjoyed his horses and spreading Christmas cheer as he sang "Blue Christmas" while selling Christmas trees at the Farmers' Market.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Betty L. Lewis of Hendersonville; his son, Donnie Lewis and wife, Debbie, and their children, Michelle and Nichole; and his daughter, Connie Lewis and boyfriend, Rick Grasty, and her children, Kyle, Koty and Kayla; Cindy Swing, Anita Bowen, and Tommy Bowen. The oldest of 13 children, he is survived by Janette Ballinger of Hendersonville; Patsy and Everett Allen of Tennessee; Jack and Milly Lewis; Shelby and Terry Ledford; June and Tony Honeycutt, all of Burnsville; Johnnie and Eddie Batchelor of Apex; Carol and Rod Champion of Kings Mountain; Kim Lewis; Ramona and David McCurry; and Jeff Lewis, all of Burnsville; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home. The Revs. Waylon Ledford, Billy Ballinger and Eddie Clayton will officiate. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. A private ceremony will be held in the family cemetery in Burnsville at a later date.

Edith Collins Oates

Edith Collins Oates passed away at the age of 94 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock on Monday, Oct. 28, 2013.

She was a lifelong Henderson County resident, having been born Sept. 2, 1919, in Hendersonville to the late Bessie Clayton Collins and Carroll Collins. She was also predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, Robert T. Oates, Jr. who died in February 2002; a brother Harold Collins; and a son Larry A. Oates, who died in May of 2004.

Edith was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hendersonville for more than 50 years and prior to that was a member of Valley Hill Baptist Church. She was a seamstress for Ruth Originals (Ruth of Carolina) and a sales associate for several local stores during her working career.

She is survived by one sister, Ruby Collins Oates; one brother Max Collins and his wife Margaret of Hendersonville; one son Ronald W. Oates and wife Jean of Hendersonville; one daughter Janice Oates Crawford and husband Don of Lilburn, Ga.; six grandchildren Alan Oates and Brian Oates (Lynn) both of Marietta, Ga., Stephanie Merchiore (Chris) of Atlanta, Lisa Lennkh (Matthias) of London, Michael Crawford (Jessica) of McDonough, Ga., and David Crawford (Lauren) of Valdosta, Ga.; seven great-grandchildren, Brycen and Emilee Grace Oates, Alexandre Lennkh, Brooke and Blake Crawford, and Ava and Jack Crawford; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and special friends.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, in the Kirby Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home. Rev. Wally Shamburger will officiate. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Shepherd Memorial Park.

The family wishes to sincerely thank the caregivers at Dr. William R. Moffitt's office of Hendersonville and the Elizabeth House of Flat Rock. Also, special thanks to the friends and neighbors in Brooklyn Manor that have so faithfully shown their concern and love for Edith.
