Cora Isabelle Davis Dryman

Cora Isabelle Davis Dryman, born Sept. 27, 1916 in Spartanburg, S.C., received her angel wings Oct. 11, 2013.

She lived in North Carolina, Tennessee and New York City during her 97 years. She worked at Sales Biltmore Bleachery where she met and married John Augustinos. After his

death she married James Dryman. Along with her husbands she is preceeded in death by her mother, father, brother and nephew.

She is survived by three daughters, Orania Passmore, Epatia Alberson and husband Gene, Marcelle Andrews. Later Teri Norris joined our family as daughter number four because she wanted three special sisters and learn to cook southern style under mama's watchful eye. Also her love was shared with Austin Mack, son number one and Dawn Day, daughter number five. She had ten grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 18 great great grandchildren.

She was a special lady who won the hearts of all she met and will leave many memories.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, at Shepherd Memorial Park.

The family wishes to express our heart felt gratitude to Dr. Randy Tryon for all the loving care he gave our mother. Thanks to all the staff of Life Care who cared so lovingly and treated her with gentle hands and warm hearts.

Ronnie Harold Case, 49, of Fruitland, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2013 at the Elizabeth
House.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carroll Lee Case Sr., his grandparents, Dudley and
Essie King Jackson and his step-father, D.C. Banks.

He attended Union Hill Holiness Baptist Church, loved football and NASCAR.

He is survived by his loving wife of 4 years, Wanda R. Case; his mother, Maxine Jackson Case Banks of Flat Rock; two sons, Jonathon Case of Roanoke, Va., and Jimmy Lee Case of Bedford, Va.; two brothers, Carroll Lee Case Jr. (Tonya) of Hendersonville and Jimmy Case (Kris) of Flat Rock; a brother-in-law, James Radabaugh of Michigan; two sisters-in-law, Linda Folster and Brenda Pienta both of Michigan; four nieces, one nephew and several great nieces, great nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Ronnie loved his wife and family dearly including his dog "Lexie".

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 14, 2013 at the Chapel In The Pines of Jackson Funeral Service with Rev. Doug Carroll officiating. Marian S. Hines, 92

Marian S. Hines, 92, of Laurel Park passed away Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, at McCalls Hospice House in Simpsonville, SC after a short illness.

Mrs. Hines was a registered nurse, served in the US Army during WW II during which she was awarded the Bronze Star during the Siege of Manila.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Manley S. Hines and her parents.

She is survived by three sons, Pat Hines of Travelers Rest, SC, William Hines of Easley, SC, and David Hines of Lilburn, GA; a daughter, Marian Hines Rogers of Lake Lanier, GA; two grandsons and two granddaughters.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at the Chapel In The Pines of Jackson Funeral Service. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the chapel.

Marvin Kenneth Cairnes Sr., 61, of Dana passed away, Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, at the Elizabeth House.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County and was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Vernon Cairnes Sr. and Mary Branks Searcy, two brothers, Joe Branks and Jack Cairnes and a sister, Lula Barrett.

He was a truck driver and a "man of all trades".

He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Judy Rhodes Cairnes; two sons and their spouses, Kenny and Terry Lynn Cairnes of Roan Mountain, Tenn., and Marvin and Tanya Cairnes ; three daughters and their spouses, Kathy and Wayne Sinclair, Crystal and Bobby Corn and Shelby Cairnes and her fiancé Kevin all of Hendersonville; 12 grandchildren, Cole, Natalie, Tequilia, Marvin II "Spud", Julia, Karina, Sydney, Jayden, Jessie, Charlie, Margie and Jonnie; 2 great grandchildren, Skyler and Leland (on the way); a brother, Charles V. Cairnes Jr.; two sisters and their spouses, Pat and Dale Anders and Maryhelen and Henry McElory and several nieces, nephews family and friends.

Raymond T. Drake, 66

Raymond T. Drake, 66, of Hendersonville passed away Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at his home.

A native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, he was a son of the late Harley B. and Anna Nelson Drake. He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Juanita Inman, Barbara Nelon, Mary Lee Gordon and Brenda Louise Drake; and two brothers, Tommy and Gene Drake.

He was a 1966 graduate of East Henderson High School and was called to serve in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1967. He was the Assistant Director of the Hendersonville City Public Works Department, retiring after 30 years of service. He was an avid gardener who loved drag racing, old western and Elvis movies. He was of the Baptist Faith.

Mr. Drake is survived by his beloved wife of 42 ½ years, Brenda Ledbetter Drake; two daughters, Alicia Danyel Cummings of Flat Rock and Soncha Mahoney of Hendersonville; granddaughter, Kianna-Rae Cummings of Flat Rock; 5 brothers, Lewis Elmer Drake, Larry Drake, Gary Drake, Allen Drake, all of Hendersonville and Harold Drake of Penrose; two sisters, JoAnne Justice and Karen Fowler, both of Hendersonville and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at Fairhaven Baptist church. Rev. Ansel Pace, Rev. Chris Norris and Mr. James Justice will officiate. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park with military honors rendered by Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post 77, Hedrick-Rhodes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5206, and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 14. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. Friday at Fairhaven Baptist Church.

Julia Shaye Israel, 5

Julia Shaye Israel, 5, of Hendersonville, earned her angel wings on Oct. 7, 2013.

She is survived by her mother and father, Jessica and Joshua Brock, of the home, as well as many close family members and friends.

Julia delighted in dancing, swinging, dressing up, giving "reprises," coloring and drawing. She was fascinated by volcanoes and was able to see one in Hawaii, thanks to WNC Make-a-Wish. She could often be found watching My Little Pony with her Papaw, and Fluttershy was her favorite pony. She cared dearly for animals — rabbits, horses, and her pets Zoso and Boots. She loved Jesus with all her heart and her favorite worship songs were "10,000 Reasons" and "Cornerstone."

Julia possessed a contagious joie de vivre that touched everyone she met. She was generous, self-effacing, kind, and considerate. Her ability to precisely communicate her thoughts and emotions transcended her age, and she sought genuine connection in every interaction. She lived creatively and intuitively, embracing the world with wide-eyed wonder. Julia's courage and tenacity in the fight against her brain stem tumor inspired everyone who met her.

She was a dandy, and we will miss her beyond measure. Julia, our hearts will never float away from yours.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, at the Rock Church, 273 Monte Vista Rd, Candler. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at the Rock Church with Pastor Kirk Bowman officiating. Burial will follow at Shepherd Memorial Park.

Donna Maxine Morseman Goodman, 94

Donna Maxine Morseman Goodman, 94, of Hendersonville passed away Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at Sunnybrook Assisted Living.

A native of Jackson, Mich., she was the daughter of the late James Dixon and Lenora Hawes Morseman. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Harold B. Goodman; her daughter, Donna Lynn Trice and her son, Gary G. Goodman.

Donna enjoyed this area immensely, having summered here since 1968, settling permanently in 1993. An active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, her life centered around her faith in God and her family. She volunteered as a "Pink Lady" at Pardee Hospital, a service to the community she thoroughly enjoyed. Her friends far and wide often called her the "hostess with the mostest".

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughter, Darlene G. Gosch and her husband Harold; her brother, Jerry D. Morseman and his wife Beverly; daughter in-law, Sandi Goodman; 6 grandchildren, Cheryl Tillery and her husband Horace, Redonna Trice, Karen Jones and her husband Wesley, Traci King and her husband Doug, Russell Trice and Victor Gosch; and 5 great-grandchildren, Meredith and Sarah Jones, Emili and Matthew King and Morgan Hill.

Mildred Christine Haynes, 81

Mildred Christine Haynes, our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, went to be with Jesus at the age of 81 on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at Life Care Center. Her spirit left us to rejoice in the Lord, but there are many treasured memories and the peace of Jesus to comfort those of us she left behind.

Her joyous hobbies included singing in the choir, taking and collecting photos, and gardening in her roses and tulips. She loved her family and her many years of having everyone over for good food and late night Rock games. They will be sorely missed as well as the delicious and beautifully decorated cakes she baked for friends and family.

She was the daughter of the late Ralph J. and Nannie Sue Robertson. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Adger G. Haynes and a sister Katherine Robertson.

She is survived by her sister, Pantha Jean Robertson of Lake Lure; one son Randall G. Haynes; two daughters Penny Haynes Fore and Jennifer Haynes; two grandchildren Brandi McWhorter Sanders and husband Jamie and Lindsey Fore; and two great-grandchildren Elijah Sanders and Ayla Sanders all of Henderson County; her best friend, Leona Wilson of Lake Lure; as well as a host of very special nieces and nephews across the world.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at French Broad Baptist Church, 182 Grandview Lane, Hendersonville. Reverend Kemuel Pruitt and Pastor Todd Eaton will officiate. A graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at Bill's Creek Cemetery at 1475 Bill's Creek Road, Lake Lure, with Reverend Terrell Dillingham. Alvin Ernest Cobb

Alvin Ernest Cobb of Hendersonville passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013.

A native of Largo, Fla., he was the son of the late Charles Ernest Cobb and Mary E. Cobb. He served in the U.S. Army with assignments in Korea and Japan and received a B.S. degree from the University of Florida and a Master of Science degree in Environmental Health (M.S.E.H.) from East Tennessee State University. He retired as Assistant Director of Environmental Health for Pinellas County in St. Petersburg, Fla., after 24 years of employment.

Surviving are his wife, Sue F. Cobb; a son, Bruce Alvin Cobb; two daughters, Susan Cobb Singleton and Lisa Ellen Cobb; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11, 2013 at Grace Lutheran Church in Hendersonville.

Julia Ann Malone Ensley, 51

Julia Ann Malone Ensley, 51, of Mills River passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013.

She was a native of Huttonsville, W.Va., and a resident of Henderson County for 10 years. She was the daughter of Julia B. Malone and the late Dean S. Malone. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Patrick Charles Malone and mother-in-law, Ruby Elizabeth Frye Ensley.
Julia was employed with Bishop Hodges Pastoral Center until 2003.

In addition to her mother survivors include her loving husband, Michael Ensley; daughter, Tabitha Malone; son, Stephen Malone; brother, Stuart D. Malone and wife Connie; and nephew, Josephus Dean Malone.

James E. Murray “Yank”

James E. Murray, "Yank", 76, of Hendersonville, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, at the Elizabeth House and is finally at peace.

He was born Jan. 17, 1937, in Providence, RI and grew up in Dudley, MA. He was son of the late James H. and Doris Harrington Murray. He was also preceded in death by Gloria M. Murray, and his brother Tom Murray.

Jim graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, and began working for Cranston Prints in 1958, was transferred to Hendersonville, where he remained for the rest of his life. After 40 years, he retired as Superintendent of Printing at Cranston when the Fletcher plant closed in 1998.

He was a devout member of the Hendersonville Country Club since 1963. For 45 years he was a member of a foursome at the Club known as the "11:11 Gang". As close friends, this group had a long-standing tee time of 11:11am every Sunday. Members of The Gang were Jim, John Holley, Buck Buchannan, and Bill Stokes. Jim was known for his overwhelming generosity and dedication to the passions in his life: his church, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where he was a member for 51 years; the game of golf; the Boston Red Sox; his involvement with several charitable organizations; and of course, his loving family.

Jim was a quiet man with quick wit and subtle humor. His consistent, strong presence as a friend, father, and grandfather will be missed greatly. Where the world has lost a great man, Heaven has gained an amazing soul.

Jim is survived by four loving children and their families, his son, James H. Murray II and his wife Mindy; and granddaughter Haley; his son, Michael A. O'Connor and his wife Laura, and grandchildren Jason, Tennille, and Amber; his son Thomas J. O'Connor and his wife Rhonda, and granddaughters, Kim and Heather; his daughter, Tracy O'Connor-McGraw, and her husband Richard, and granddaughters, Megan and Kelly; four great-grandchildren; and siblings, Pat Cullen, Steve Murray, Mary Early, and Mark Murray.

A graveside service with military honors will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. A visitation will be from 1:30-3 p.m. in the chapel at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, prior to the graveside service. J. Marie Halford

J. Marie Halford, 44, of Hendersonville, died suddenly on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013.

A native of Henderson County she was born on January 27, 1969 to Margaret Dalton and the late Jack Gibson. Mrs. Halford was a lifelong resident of Henderson County, a graduate of Blue Ridge Community College and attended Mud Creek Baptist Church.

Marie enjoyed cooking, camping and spending time with friends and loved ones. She will be truly missed by all that knew and loved her.

She is survived by her loving husband, Richard S. Halford; son, R. Adam Halford; her mother and step-father Margaret (Richard) Dalton; her brother, Mark Gibson and numerous nieces and nephews.

Walter D. Swan, 93

Walter D. Swan, 93, passed away on Sept. 30, 2013, at his residence in Carolina Village.

Born July 23, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Walter D.Swan, Sr. and Alice G. Swan. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Katherin Swan, and daughter, Karen Ann Swan, and his second wife, Nellie Piening Swan.

He graduated from Hofstra College with a degree in Business Administration and resided most of his life in Freeport, NY. He retired in 1980 after a 42-year career with Chevron Corporation in the financial field and moved to Hendersonville.

Mr. Swan was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army 8th Air Force as a navigator on a B-17 bomber for the European Operations. He was a past Master of South Bay Masonic Lodge #1145.

Mr. Swan was a hospice home volunteer and drove for the FISH Organization. He was a member of Hendersonville Country Club where he enjoyed many years playing golf. He was a member of Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church and was past Congregational President and Elder.

He is survived by his third wife, Beatrice Brown Swan; his son, Walter D. Swan; and his stepdaughters, Laura Piening, Susan Piening Trotta and stepson, Brian Piening; eleven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 9:45 am Monday, Oct. 7, 2013 in the Magnolia Room of Carolina Village. Pastor Larry Rabon of Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church will conduct the service.

Lucy F. Anders

MT. AIRY —  Lucy F. Anders died quietly and with dignity at RidgeCrest Retirement Community in Mt. Airy on Sept. 23, 2013.

She had lived her entire life, with the exception of the last four months, in Henderson County. Emeritus at Pine Park was her home for 14 months before moving to Mt. Airy to be near her daughter and son-in-law.

Lucy was born to the late Sheridan and Rosa Holcombe Fisher. Her two brothers, Herman Fisher (Christine) and Perry Fisher currently live in Hendersonville.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Alonzo, or "Lon", her two daughters, Martha Jean and Judy Love.

Survivors include one daughter, Saundra McIver (Wade) of Winston-Salem, her grandson, Sean Seay (Bonnie), and three great-grandchildren (Boone, Bryson and Lola) from Athens, Ga., and a very special "daughter," Nita Walker.

She retired from General Electric and after the death of her husband worked part time at McFarlan Bakery.

Lucy was an excellent cook, seamstress, and gardener-canning and freezing the fruits of her labor. Her greatest contributions to this world however, were as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

She was a member of Bethel Wesleyan Methodist Church. Her faith endured times of joy and great sadness when two of her daughters died tragically. However, these seasons of her life didn't cause her despair nor did they define her. She tended to treat disaster and triumph the same. Lucy will be missed for her strength of character, unspoken gifts from her heart, and life lessons that all who knew and loved her will remember.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Friday, October 4, 2013 at 3:00PM at Thos. Shepherd's Church Street Chapel. Her ashes will be buried at Shepherd Memorial Park following the service.

Melinda V. Eichhardt, 95

Melinda V. Eichhardt, 95, of Hendersonville passed into God's loving care on Sept. 24, 2013 at her home after a lengthy illness.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. Stephen Eichhardt.

Melinda was born, raised, and married in Budapest, Hungary. In her youth she lived in the Netherlands and Belgium and she traveled throughout Europe. Being fluent in five languages, she was the foreign correspondent for the National Bank of Hungary. Melinda was an accomplished classical pianist, having studied at the Liszt Ferenc (Franz) Music Academy in Budapest. She was a woman of remarkable courage, talent, and beautiful spirit. Melinda enjoyed gardening, nature, needlework, and had a special love for German Shepherd dogs. Prior to living in Hendersonville, she and her husband lived in Austria, Michigan, and Florida.

Melinda is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Terry Zielinski of Hendersonville.

Catholic Requiem Masses will be said for Melinda at St. Hugo of the Hills in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and at St. Stephen Basilica in Budapest, Hungary.

Margaret B. Marker, 96, of Hendersonville died Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at the Elizabeth House.

Born Maggie Blanche Wilson in Bewleyville, Ky., on Oct. 31, 1916, she was married to Russell Marker in 1940.

She raised her two children, Carol and Curtis, in Palatine, Ill., and loved her four grandchildren. She trained as a nurse, working at Plumgrove and Maple Hill Nursing Homes in Palatine. She resided and enjoyed her retirement in Hendersonville for the last 15 years.

Bertha C. Gilbert Laughter, 86

Bertha C. Gilbert Laughter, 86, of Edneyville passed away Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at
Life Care of Hendersonville.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County. She was preceded in death by her husband, James "Sodie" Laughter, her daughter, Janice Lynn Laughter, her granddaughter, Kelly LaRae Baldwin, her parents, Benjamin Franklin Gilbert and Ura Dalton Gilbert and six siblings.

She had retired from Taylor Instrument Company in Arden. She loved to sing, listen to old Southern gospel, work in her flower and vegetable gardens, sew and was a good cook.

She was a lifelong member of Mountain Home Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, June and Barry Mullinax of Columbia, S.C., and Deborah and Micheal Hyder of Hendersonville; eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at Mountain Home Baptist Church with Rev. Dale Gilbert officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church and at other times will be at Bertha's home.

Jerri C. King, 75

Jerri C. King, 75, of Wolfpen in Hendersonville went to be with the Lord Monday, Sept. 30, 2013, at her home after an extended illness.

Born in Sanford, she was the daughter of the late Jack Clark and Mattie Clark Humphries. She was also preceded in death by her twin brother, Jack Adams Clark and her step-father, Ferris Humphries.

Jerri graduated from Sanford Central High School and the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse for Wake and Brunswick County Health Departments, retiring in 2002. Jerri was a member of the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority in Raleigh and a member of the Red Hat Society, Turtle Watch Society, and Toastmasters of Brunswick County. Before moving to Hendersonville eight years ago, Jerri was an active member of the Oceanview United Methodist Church and their Stephen's Ministry as well as the Emmaus Community of Brunswick County. She was a current member of Balfour United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

Jerri enjoyed reading, traveling, sewing, and making crafts and jewelry. She especially loved the North Carolina coast.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, H.L. "Rock" King of Wolfpen; daughter, Teresa L. King of Hendersonville and her children, Lauren Repass Garren and Katie Repass; son, Richard F. King and wife, Jeanette E. King, USAF, and their daughter, Jessica, all of Ridgeville, S.C., and son, Jonathon of Oregon; sister-in-law, Helen Clark of Gloucester, Va., and her children, Celeste Lawton and family and Jennifer Baucom and family; and many members of Jerri's extended family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Balfour United Methodist Church. The Reverends Deb Patterson and Fred Roberts will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
