Two airlines debut AVL-to-Minneapolis flights

Two airlines have added flights from Asheville Regional Airport to Minneapolis/St. Paul, including a Minnesota-based low-cost carrier that debuted its AVL service this week.

Airport and airline officials and passengers celebrated Allegiant airline's inaugural flight to Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP) Thursday with refreshments, prizes and a celebratory ribbon cutting. MSP is Allegiant's 16th nonstop flight option from AVL, and now operates twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays.

Allegiant now flies from AVL to these 16 cities: Austin, TX (AUS) — seasonal; Baltimore, MD (Washington D.C. area) (BWI); Boston, MA (BOS) — seasonal; Chicago, IL (MDW) — seasonal; Denver, Colorado (DEN) — seasonal; Destin, FL (VPS) — seasonal; Ft. Lauderdale, FL (FLL); Houston, TX (HOU); Las Vegas, NV (LAS); Minneapolis, MN (MSP); Newark, NJ (New York City, NY area) (EWR); Orlando (Sanford), FL (SFB); West Palm Beach (PBI), Ft. Myers/Punta Gorda, FL (PGD); Sarasota (SRQ); St. Petersburg/Clearwater, FL (PIE). Allegiant will begin service to Key West, FL (EYW) in November, its 17th destination from AVL.

Meanwhile, Sun Country Airlines, AVL's newest carrier, also began service to MSP.

"Asheville and Western North Carolina now enjoy the most robust nonstop flight options than ever before, and it is exciting to welcome a new airline to our region," airport director Lew Bleiweis said. "Minneapolis/St. Paul is a destination that has been in our top-25 markets for many years, showing that there is a demand for air service. We’re excited to introduce Sun Country, a Minnesota-based airline, to travelers in our region."

 

Sun Country Airlines currently operates a total of more than 95 routes across 65 exciting destinations in the United States, Mexico, Central America, and Caribbean. The new flight will operate twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays.
 
Sun Country’s customer experience includes free in-flight entertainment, complimentary non-alcoholic beverage service, a new mobile-friendly website with more self-service tools, and new interiors on each aircraft. The Sun Country service to Minnesota flies Thursday and Sunday.
