UNC Health Pardee and AdventHealth each made the top 20 in the annual best hospital rankings by Business North Carolina, each made the top 10 in patient satisfaction surveys and Pardee also won a high ranking for two types of surgeries.
In the overall Best Hospitals rankings, Pardee moved up eight notches, to 12th, while AdventHealth was ranked No. 19.
Business NC's ratings system is based on "more than 25 health care metrics, with a significant weighting based on data from the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services," the magazine said. "The report includes patient-satisfaction surveys, infections, readmissions and mortality rates for common procedures."
Duke University Hospital earned the top spot in the magazine's annual ranking of the state’s best hospitals followed by Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, UNC Medical Center, Duke Raleigh and UNC RexHealthcare. Mission Hospital was tied for sixth.
In the magazine's "Patient Picks" measure, based on percentage of patients who would recommend the hospital to others, Advent ranked fifth, down one from 2023, while Pardee vaulted to 10th from its the No. 25 place last year.
In its quality of care measure of specialties based on patient safety, results and input from the medical community, Blue Cross Blue Shield recognized Pardee for bariatric, knee and hip replacement surgery. Pardee also gets a mention in a feature about community hospitals that have survived in an era of consolidation, urban competitors and other challenges, noting that the Henderson County-owned health care provider has repeatedly been named among the top 150 community hospitals in the U.S. and made Healthgrades' list of 100 Best Hospitals.
"Survivors share other characteristics such as intensely local governance in which the hospital board chair might be the patient's banker or preacher," the report said. "Mediare data, patient satisfaction and other measures of quality rebuke the notion that bigger equates to better care."
Local governance has been a hallmark of Pardee for many years. Its chairs in recent years have included a banker, construction supply company owner and factory executive. Board members, Pardee President/CEO Jay Kirby and the executive management team recently completed a long-range strategic plan that resulted in a commitment to invest $100 million in physician practices and operating rooms in Hendersonville, Brevard and Mills River.
