Steven Lanier Smith, 62

Steven Lanier Smith, 62, of Hendersonville went to be with the Lord Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Elizabeth House.

A native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, Steven was the oldest son of the late Gerald L. Smith and Alice Gilbert Smith. He worked at Continental-Teves for the last several years. Steven was of the Baptist Faith. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include his loving wife of 15 years, Judy C. Smith; a daughter, Stephanie Smith Hamilton and husband Bryan and son Noah of Hendersonville; sons, Jason R. Smith and wife Crystal of Hendersonville and Chase W. Smith of Brevard; sister, Debra S. Jones and husband Larry of Augusta, GA; brother, Dennis R. Smith and wife Pamela of Hendersonville; nephew, Trooper Kyle Smith; a number of aunts and uncles; and many stepchildren and step-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Four Seasons Hospice and the Elizabeth House and its caregivers for their extraordinary service.

Evona H. Worsham, 78

Evona H. Worsham, 78, went home to be with the Lord that she loved so much.

She was a daughter of the late Jerry and Bessie Kuykendall Henderson.

Evona is survived by her son Clifford Worsham and his wife Wendy; her daughters Linda Williams and her husband Michael and Ruthann Worthington and her husband David. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren, great- great grandchildren; and a much loved and cherished friend Kenneth Walker who she cared for deeply. Other survivors include many nieces and nephews; her sister Ruth Nicholson, brother Lee Henderson and his wife Louise and sister-in-law Wanda Henderson.

She loved her family deeply and will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.

In addition to her parents Jerry and Bessie Henderson, she was preceded by her husband Troy Dean Worsham, son Terry Dean Worsham, brothers Joseph and Berlin Henderson.

A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 2014, at Shepherd Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors.

Marion Joan Stockman, 81, of Hendersonville died Sunday, July 6, 2014, at Pardee Hospital.

Mrs. Stockman was born Feb. 28, 1933, in Flint, Mich., to the late Theodore and Alfonsena Hackett.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years Maurice C. Stockman, sons Robert Stockman of Texas, Tony Stockman of Pennsylvania, Jim Stockman and Bill Stockman of the home, and one daughter Mary Ellen Stockman of the home; other survivors include 3 grandchildren, Jill, Jenifer, Nicholas and 6 great-grandchildren.

Deaver Lewis Cairnes, 82

Deaver Lewis Cairnes, 82, of Hendersonville died Sunday, July 6, 2014 at his residence.

Mr. Cairnes was born Sept. 11, 1931, in Horse Shoe to the late Lewis Jefferson Cairnes and Veda Sue Moffitt Cairnes. He was a member of Horse Shoe Baptist Church and retired from Ecusta as a machinist after 37 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Alma and their two infant daughters, as well as, his second wife Sara Davenport Cairnes.

Deaver, a Navy veteran, served on the USS Bremmerton, from 1952 to 1956 during the Korean Conflict. He was the Past Master of Kedron Lodge 387 AF & AM, a member of the York Rite of Asheville, the Oasis Shrine, and the Hendersonville Shrine Club where he enjoyed being a member of the Clown Unit.

He is survived by daughter Teresa Link and her husband Michael of Hendersonville and son Doug Davenport and his wife Teri of Charlotte; two grandchildren Benjamin and Katelyn. Other survivors include a brother-in-law Bill E. Holden of Horse Shoe and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, July 10, 2014, from the Mausoleum Chapel at Shepherd Memorial Park followed by a service conducted by Rev. Tollie Cunningham with Military Honors. A Masonic graveside service conducted by Kedron Lodge will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Shepherd Memorial Park.

Elsie J. Pugh, 78, of Hendersonville died Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn.

She lived many years in Asheville before moving to Hendersonville 15 years ago. She was a great entrepreneur having owned and operated several businesses with her husband through the years. She was very involved in the community and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob Pugh.

She is survived by a daughter, Brenda Staszak and her husband Mike; three sons, Tim Pugh, Bob Pugh and David Pugh; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Maxine Milner, 89

Maxine Milner, 89, of Hendersonville died peacefully at home on July 4, 2014.

Maxine was born Feb. 23, 1925, to the late William Samuel Early and Mayme Cline Early. She was also preceded in death by her husbands James Dudley Rogers, MD, in 1959, and Dr. Gerald G. Pumplin in 1991, and her brothers Ralph Early and Edward Norton Early.

Maxine spent her youth in Kentucky before moving to Michigan in 1945. She was a resident of Hendersonville for more than 30 years.

Maxine is survived by her husband Robert G. "Bob" Milner; two daughters, Landra Rogers of Gaineville, Fla., and Paula L. Pumplin (Martinus C. de Boer) of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, the Netherlands. Other survivors include her grandchildren Bryan Slatner of Charlotte, Gregory Slatner of Weston, Fla., and Emma de Boer of Alkmaar, the Netherlands; great-grandchildren Luka Slatner and Eliana Slatner; her brother J. Don Early of Clearfield, Ky., and nieces and nephews in Kentucky, Rhode Island, Florida and Iowa.

Maxine served as a hospice volunteer from 1981 until 1988. Her hobbies included bowling, reading and cooking. She and Bob enjoyed numerous trips to faraway places. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Four Seasons hospice for the exceptional care and support they provided during Maxine's final illness.

Hazel Joann Justice, 74

Hazel Joann Justice, 74, of Hendersonville went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday July 2, 2014, at the Elizabeth House following a short stay at Pardee Hospital where she underwent surgery for cancer.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County. She was born Oct. 1, 1939, to the late Benjamin Harley Drake and Anna Irene Nelson Drake. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Delores Justice and her husband of 44 years James Monroe Justice, Sr.

She is survived by her children James Monroe Justice, Jr. and his wife Karen of Campobello, S.C., and their daughter; son Robert Harley Justice and his wife Marci of Flat Rock and children; daughter Shelia Dianne Foster, her husband Steve of Jacksonville, Fla., and children; son Phillip Andrew Justice and Lillie Allen of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and children; daughter Evon Delynn Ramirez of Hendersonville,  children and grandchildren; and son Mark Daniel Justice of Hendersonville.

She leaves behind several brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, and beloved family members. Family and friends of special importance to Joann include her brother, Lewis Elmer Drake of Hendersonville; granddaughter, Holly Christine Nicholson of Hendersonville; nephew David Drake of Hendersonville; John Nicholson of Hendersonville and Donna James of Hendersonville.

A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2014, at Thos. Shepherd's Church Street Chapel officiated by Rev. Tom Burke of New Beginnings Church. Robert Chester, 88

Robert Chester, 88, died peacefully holding the hand of Roma, his wife of 65 years, on June 30, 2014 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock.

He was born Jan. 27, 1926, in Enid, Okla., where he lived until 2012 when he moved to Hendersonville to be near his daughter, Lana, and her husband, Steve Hendershott. His son, Lance Chester and his wife, Susan of N.M., were also with him at his death. He is survived by one grandson, Travis Hendershott, married to Emily, of McLean, Va.

Bob, as he was known to family, worked for Oklahoma Gas and Electric Company as a high voltage technician until his retirement. He served in the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific. He sang in the choir, loved movies and participated in many trips and activities at Lake Pointe Landing. He had a lifelong passion for steam engines, railroads and photography.

While living in Hendersonville, he attended Moore's Grove United Methodist Church.

A memorial service in his honor will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 5, 2014, in the Lake Pointe Landing chapel.

Ransome H. McDaniel, "Junior," 83

Ransome H. McDaniel, "Junior," 83 , of Hendersonville passed away Friday, June 27, 2014, at his home.

Born in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Ransome McDaniel, Sr. and Ella Mae Searcy McDaniel.

He was a graduate of Flat Rock High School and served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean war. He was known as "Junior" by his family and many friends and was a well-known local insurance agent and meat cutter. He was a member of the Henderson County rescue Squad for over 40 years and was a past Commander of the Hedrick-Rhodes VFW and a member of the American Legion. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose at the Asheville Moose Lodge for 37 years where he received The Pilgrim Degree, the highest degree of service. He had served in every capacity and was the current past Governor at the time of his death. He and his wife enjoyed traveling to Moose Conventions in North Carolina, San Diego, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Chicago and Orlando

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence McDaniel; five sisters, Ruby McDaniel (Herman), Leona Searcy (Julian), Lucille Pressley (Lynn), Evelyn Corn (Earl) and Dot Haynes (Herrold), and one step-son, Davis Overby.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 19 years, Faye Overby McDaniel; four children, Cathy Shelton, Brenda Owens (Kenny), Sally Thomas and Ransome McDaniel, III; He was known as "Paw Paw" by his five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two step-sons, Daniel Overby and Paul Overby of Stuart, Va.,; two step-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Clover McDaniel and many nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home. Burial will follow the service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Rev. Robert Hefner will officiate. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Margaret A. Mantel, 96, of Hendersonville died Friday June 20, 2014 at Carolina Village Care Center.

Margaret was born Aug. 12, 1917, in Stamford, Conn., to the late Herman and Emma Gross Mantel. She was employed by US Steel and General Electric. She retired to Hendersonville, which she considered her home.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters Marie and Kathryn.

She is survived by her nieces Susan Johnson and Lucinda McHale and her husband Larry.

William L. Sheppard, 91

William L. Sheppard, 91, of Hot Springs passed away Sunday, June 22, 2014.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter Sheppard Sr. and Bonnie McCloud Sheppard and a sister Diane Miller.

He was US Navy Veteran of WWII. He enjoyed farming and the construction industry.

He is survived by one son, Ernest Sheppard and his wife Rosie of Hendersonville; two brothers, Walter Sheppard Jr. of Hendersonville and Lamar Sheppard of Blowing Rock; a sister, Rebecca Elliott of Hendersonville; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at noon Thursday, June 26, 2014, at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain with military honors conducted by the National Guard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Jackson Funeral Home.

Randall Hoyt "Papaw" Hampton, 64, of Saluda passed away Saturday, June 21, 2014, at his home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hoyt W. Hampton and Lowee Fisher Hampton and a brother, Harold Hampton.

Randy grew up in Brevard, graduated from Brevard High School and retired from the NC Department of Corrections after 30 years of service. Randy was an active member of Mud Creek Baptist Church where he loved to sing in the choir. He loved the Lord Jesus Christ and encouraged all he came in contact with to do so as well. He was a devoted Father and "Papaw". He was a loyal and trusted friend to many and will be missed by all!

He is survived by his son, David Hampton and his wife, Lori of Hendersonville; three grandsons, Cameron, Zachary and Nicholas; two sisters, Joyce Raines and her husband Brian of Liberty, S.C., and Margaret Teague of Hendersonville; one brother, Doug Hampton and his wife Joyce of Brevard and many nieces and nephews.

Stephen Vieira, 65

Stephen Vieira, 65, of Hendersonville died Friday, June 20, 2014, alongside his family after a period of declining health. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Mary Rosa Vieira.

A native of Providence, R.I., Stephen completed his undergraduate degree at Wabash College. He returned home to the University of Rhode Island to complete his MBA Degree. Shortly thereafter he enrolled in the Wake Forest University School of Law where he earned his Juris Doctorate (JD).

He was called to serve his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era, and during Operation Desert Storm he was a Naval Reservist Attorney at the Pentagon with the Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG). He also enjoyed a private law practice in Richmond, Va., until 1992.

Stephen and his family relocated to Hendersonville following his retirement and began enjoying his life as a devoted golfer. He was challenged by the game and loved the camaraderie with other golfers at the Hendersonville Country Club. He proudly hit a hole in one on the 11th hole on the course which is now known as hole 13. The celebration that followed is still fondly remembered by family and friends. He loved to cook and enjoyed entertaining. He was a member of The Continuing Congregation of First Presbyterian Church.

Stephen is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary Thomas Vieira of Hendersonville; one son, Alex Vieira of Asheville; two daughters, Weesie Vieira of New York, N.Y., and Margaret Vieira of Los Angeles, Calif. He is also survived by two brothers, Dr. Edwin Vieira, Jr. and his wife, Anne Mary of Front Royale, Va., and Dr. Jeffrey Vieira and his wife, Regina Hawkey of New York, N.Y.; one sister, Meredith Vieira and her husband, Richard Cohen of New York, N.Y., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Vieira residence. There will be a Celebration of Life Service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2014, at the Vieira residence.

Marguerite Watts Wilson, 82, of Flat Rock died Thursday, May 29, 2014, at Margaret R. Pardee Memorial Hospital.

She was born Dec. 4, 1931, in Queens, N.Y., to the late Myron F. Watts and Florence Harrison Watts. She was also preceded in death by her beloved sister, Florence Watts who died in May of 2009, as well as a favorite cousin, Gertrude L. Mullin 6-24-11.

Marguerite was reared in New York and worked as a telephone supervisor for Nassau Co. Department of Senior Citizen Affairs.

She is survived by cousins Alice Emerson, Muriel Quinn, Florence Quinn and William Quinn of Long Island, N.Y.; Barbara Scheele of Pacific Grove, Calif., and Cathleen Einstein of Sterling, Va. Gertrude's children, Cathie Mullin-Tarantino, AnneMarie Baker, John Mullin.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2014, in the Our Lady of the Angels Chapel of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Namdev Dagam officiating.

Shirley Dettling Brennen, 84, of Hendersonville died Monday, June 16, 2014, at her residence.

Mrs. Brennen was born Feb. 1, 1930, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to the late Edwin John Dettling and Louise Helen Sullivan Dettling. Shirley was raised in Miami Beach, Fla. , attended St. Patricks School and Barry College where she was a music major.

Shirley was active in the Junior League of Pittsburgh and the Auxiliary league of Mercy Hospital. She and Hugh have resided in the Asheville-Hendersonville area for the last 40 years.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 65 years, Hugh James Brennen; a son Hugh James Brennen, Jr. and his wife Terri of Talking Rock, Ga.,; daughter, Sally Witherington and her husband Charles of Marietta, Ga., and daughter Louise Helen Brennen of Hendersonville; a brother Edwin John Dettling, Jr. and his wife Barrie of St. Michaels, Md.; other survivors include four grandchildren Sara Louise Gabriel, Jennifer Chapin, Victoria Witherington, and Charles Witherington; one great-grandson, Brennen James Chapin.

Terry Parker Wallace, 76

Terry Parker Wallace, 76 of Flat Rock died Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Mission-St. Joseph Hospital.

Mr. Wallace was born Feb. 25, 1938, in Gastonia to the late Walter Grady and Evelyn Strange Wallace.

Terry retired after 32 years of service in the United States Marine Corp with the rank of Colonel. He was a member of Pinecrest ARP Church.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years Imogene Wallace; sister Cybil Mecale; niece Donna Askew; nephew John Mecale.
